I just installed a depo intercooler. I may go back to to stock

I have the Ford performance tune. After installing the intercooler the car does not pull as hard. It's not as responsive. In second gear around 2,000 rpms it would pull instant and squeal tire throughout the RPMs now it feels more sluggish and does not squeal tire at all. It feels more like the stock intercooler on a hot day. It is 70 out. I would rather have the stock intercooler and the car feel like this on hot days but on cooler days I get more power than the aftermarket intercooler feeling like this all the time.

I checked. The clamps are on tight.

That doesn't sound right at all, it sounds like there is a leak somewhere. Like UnfocusedST said, check the connection points, the symposer, and I'd check the MAP sensor on the intercooler itself. Maybe it isn't seated all the way, or the o-ring was damaged. Also, take a good look at the welds on the core, you could spray some soapy water on the welds to check for a crack. The Depo has a larger volume than the stock intercooler, but shouldn't make the car any less responsive. It didn't in my case.

I have a symposer belete. The only thing I changed was the intercooler. When I removed the MAP sensor from the factory intercooler I could see the o-ring has a small piece out of it on the one side. I did not have one that fit if and I needed to get it back together for work the next day. I know I need to replace it. It was like that in the factory intercooler. Do you think a leak that small could cause this? The boost is reading the same on the dash as before.

I do not have an access port. I am still in warranty. When the warranty is up a may go for a custom tune.

Although I'm used to it by now, my Depo IC did introduce more lag. I confirmed with a reliable tuner that any IC will cause this. Not sure to what extent your butt dyno is correct but you may just be feeling a little lag and exaggerating it a bit. My car is def not as sharp or peppy as with stock IC.

If the loss of power is as drastic as they say then you might have another problem.

I wonder if one of the smaller-core units like vortech or wagner have this same issue. It does make sense why this would happen.

Good so it's not depo racing IC, maybe a leak somewhere? Coz I am about to buy a depo racing 3.5 and I also got FRPP like op.
I almost got depo racing IC a long while ago but had other expenses, anyways depo racing IC is still the same decent quality as before right? Gonna wait and see what kind of discount they offer for the holidays.

How's ATP FMIC? That's a little more expensive but will work with ATP flange and works with HKS BOV, really like the sound but back and forth and the extra cost vs depo 350 bucks!

I have NO complaints here, Depo 3.5" for a few months and the pulls are very consistent. The quality is top notch and you will still need to get a couple of nuts for the lower mounting tabs. Any and all variation of a front mount, being a larger volume will add a small amount of lag. You decide if you really need an IC and could live with the added lag. If you tune you may notice it a bit less, if you don't you may may still notice it but then many claim they don't it all depends of how your level of OCD is.

If i were to do it again, i probably wouldn't have done it but for the price you cant beat it. I daily drive my car so the stock IC was fine but now thinking forward to a couple of track days, im glad i have it.

A few other people have said, a larger intercooler will introduce more lag. To be clear, the car will NOT be slower. You will have more available power than when you had the stock IC. Because you’ve put in such a large intercooler the turbo has to pressurize the new larger volume before the boost will built up. This will manifest itself as turbo lag.

But you won’t see reduced performance, you numbers should be higher with the IC. After consecutive pulls you will have more power than on the stock IC. If you were concerned about warranty issues changing the IC may cause issues.

I am not saying it's Depo problem. I think it's the lag I'm feeling. I don't think I would feel it on the stock tune. with the Ford performance tune it was instant power. It felt more like my 88 Mustang GT than a turbo 4. In 1 at about 2500 rpms I could give it about 3\4 throttle and the tires would ignite. Now nothing. If I would have a warranty problem I would put the stock IC back on before tacking it in. I have about a year and half on the warranty. After that I will get a custom tune.

Depo “beast” customer here. Very satisfied and would do it again. It’s a great value FMIC.

One of the bolt channels was too narrow for the provided bolts. I spent ~30 minutes at Lowe’s finding a bolt that would fit.

I was going Go to the beach they decided to save my money for something else Tim said it wouldn’t be really worth it for what I’m running

Update* I removed the bumper cover and replaced the bad o-ring on the map sensor. I removed the tubes going to the intercooler and replaced the clamps with T-bolt clamps. I did the hair spray trick to slip the boost hoses onto the intercooler to help seal them. I also added a ground wire from the -battery wire to the frame as described in another post. After taking it for a ride it felt about the same. The cooler it got outside and the more I drove it the better it got. With it in the 30s out it now lights up the tires in 2nd like it did in 1st. I am afraid when summer comes it will go back to being sluggish.

Does the boost gage get it's info before or after the intercooler?

Since we were on the discussion of intercoolers and turbo lag on page 1 of this thread, I'd like to personally note that the redesigned CPE lightweight intercooler (with the diverters in the end tanks) doesn't interoduce any noticeable lag on the stock tune. That being said, under their product description they do mention lag was one of the areas of concern when redesigning this particular IC, so whatever they did to this unit addresses the issues that other ones have.

somewhere around 24-25 the same as before the intercooler upgrade. I would go to WOT at around 2500 rpm and it would accelerate slowly then like a switch it would hit power. Even in power it would not spin the wheels in 2nd. It would before the upgrade. After driving it for a while it seems like the computer needed to relearn things. It is not my daily driver so I don’t put a lot of miles on it. The more I drove it the better it felt. Now It is just as good as it was or better.
