HOW-TO: LED Cornering Light Upgrade - The Right Way! (2015+ ST2/3 and RS)

Howdy all,

This one goes out to those of you with the 2015-18 ST2/3/RS's that have the Adaptive headlights...in the past, I've come across a few posts where people attempt to retrofit either blue-hued halogen PSX24W bulbs, and in some cases (improperly-designed) LED bulbs from Amazon. However, most remark that the LEDs either add output but scatter the beam pattern, or render the cornering light absolutely useless due to the optics being so far off from stock. After studying the design of the cornering lamp in this particular light, I've devised a solution!

IMPORTANT: You need to make sure to buy LED PSX24W bulbs that are the "dual-sided" design. You CANNOT use the ones that are round and have a zillion LEDs all over them, and you CANNOT use the ones that have like 3 or 4 LEDs facing up/down/left/right, or are in a triangle configuration. These WILL NOT WORK. It HAS to be the dual-sided kind.

With that bit out of the way, essentially you will need to modify the plastic bulb bracket so that the bulb is clocked 45º clockwise (passenger side) or counterclockwise (driver side) if you're looking at the bulb from the rear. This points the LED output directly at the reflector inside the light, which then directs the beam into the proper pattern, producing useful output.

Here are the exact bulbs I purchased on Amazon that worked beautifully for this installation (not sponsored):

I made a YouTube video that visually walks you through the theory and installation process to make this work, I will post it at the end of this post! Below are some photos of the installation process and the output:

I'm really happy with the results, it's literally a night-and-day difference if you get the beam pattern right!!

Here is the more detailed walkthrough/explanation on YouTube:

Hopefully this helps some of you guys out, thanks for the read!

Cheers
Ben

Very nice write up!
Thanks for sharing...

Now me and my lowly ST1 are going to go and sulk... :p

So I watched the video. Output seems better there than the pics shared here. I'm impressed.

For 25 bucks, I purchased these. I'll update how they work on a PFL car.

I did do some digging, and Diode dynamics, Morimoto, SV.4, and GTR lighting all sell options for these, but they're all 140 dollars and up. I did email TRS asking if any of these options were indexable. I'll share that info with you guys, hope someone here will spring for one of these premium options to try out and give us feedback! I've been pinching lately, though, so I have to rein in my unecessary purchases a bit.

Ours are located more towards the center of the car. You can see OEM bulb vs my round led here. Lol interestingly, you can see the reflection of where the LEDs reflect off. The same should still apply to us though, just might need to play with the angle, see if 45° still works the best. Either way, the round style I have is probably not ideal. We'd want to the largest led pointing right at the reflector vs a bunch of tiny chips like I have.

I've had a similar style LED bulb before with a little set screw in the plastic base. It wasn't that secure, I RTV'd them together with ultra grey so twisting them wouldn't make the plastic spin on the bulb.

I would get them again, good value tho. I had the fan style base on a 2013 Mazda 3.

Fanless may have less lumens, but for cornering it should be fine.

Yeah I was curious to see how well the set screw would hold it's position with the various nvh my car has lol, so once the ideal position is found, I'd set the position more permanently too. I'd agree about the fan not being necessary either since these will typically only be on for short bursts since they only come on at low speed and only when turning.

I look forward to your findings. Yeah, I wouldn't spend more than 25 on these lights, they arent a primary forward light and I really doubt we'd see a return in the $/performance for them.

@BX77 you and me both!

So yes, they have to be installed in the exact same manner by drilling the new hole in the ring, as outlined in your video, for the PFL cars.

I will say that the mounting systems for this type of bulb is annoyingly sloppy, so you can physically grab the bulb and move it around while it's on and watch the 2 beams (from each chip) come in and out of focus and cross paths.

So I found that pulling the bulb upward and toward the outside edges of the car corrected the beam and focused the beam pattern back to where the OEM bulb shines.

I snaked a zip tie through this bracket and used it to pull the LED in that direction.

Here's a video of them. They are equally as Bright, but my car was on an angle with the left side tilted downward so that's why the left side appears brighter than the right. These are extremely impressive.

I just replaced the 25w D8S HIDs in my 2013 with 35w ballasts and D3S bulbs from a 2015-16 Focus. With that resolved, I then replaced the OEM PSX24W bulbs. When I bought the car 3 months ago, I noted that the pass side cornering light was out. I bought a set of Philips bulbs to replace them, noting that the pass side bulb looked good when I removed it. Hmmm ... that's not a good sign.

After replacing the ballast during the HID upgrade, I had high hopes that this would fix it, but the issue remains. I want to give this upgrade a go, but I am worried that the only thing that I didn't replace yet (the cable from the ballast to the bulb) is bad, and these new LEDs will STILL not resolve my issue. That cable seems impossible to find, and I couldn't find any used on Ebay. Any suggestions from you guys on what to do next ?? Its amazing how much a bulb being out annoys the crap out of me, but here we are ...

The cornering bulbs are a separate circuit from the HID bulbs. I would test +12 and ground separately at the cornering bulb socket with the lights on auto and the steering wheel turned. See what your readings are and go from there.
