True. Veloster's suck azz. The only thing they have going for them is it has a similiar exhaust like the one in the ST.

STeve, there's another nightmarish vehicle out there from a Ford/Fiat get together, the Ka. It eventually wound up spawning the Fiesta.

I don't think the Ka was manufactured before the Fiesta. The MK 1 Fiesta was imported from Ford's German assembly plant from 78 - 80. It was actually a great little car for the time. It was Ford's first "global" car. The Ka came later.

Im personally in love with the VT. IMO It beats the ST in a lot of things.

1. Exterior. Don't get me wrong the ST is nice but the VT is just so damn sexy especially in black
2. Interior quality is a Push with the VT getting the nod barely
3. Interior style is also a push
4. ST hands down. The VT needs a tune and 250+hp. Dyno's have shown it dropping boost over 5000rpm and running very rich.
5. Both handled great when i drove them
6. VT easily. Some guys are getting 39+mpg on the highways out west without a lot of hills
7. VT's alittle cheaper all decked out

One thing you have to look at is the AFTERMARKET. The VT's is non existent and the ST's should thrive.

Here's my differences between the two vehicles mentioned, I didn't respond to each and every criteria but noticed more obvious areas that were overlooked:

1. The swoop down roof top in the back makes sure that this vehicle cannot be confused with any other HB vehicle on the road. In other areas the appearance is similiar to that of the ST. Minus the 2 doors for the Veloster.

2. Interior wise the Veloster is a four seater. The ST however tight is a 5 seater. I prefer the Recaros of the ST2 and ST3, with the more distinctive markings as opposed to Turbo stitching. The only interior option going for the Veloster is the shifting paddle option. Unfortunately that's not an available option in the ST. Headroom in the back of the Veloster is stunted by sloping roof. (Plus the extra person is missing)

4. Veloster is way underpowered but then again that's what you get with a 1.6L. ST by a mile.

6. Hyundai/Kia has admitted to boosting the MPGs in their vehicles. Time will only tell how this affects their sales in the US with gasoline prices what they are nowadays.

I was really interested in the VT. I actually like the styling. Some of you say it is underpowered, but it weighs 400 lbs less than the ST. That is "like 40 more hp" so it is not that far off. I will say that the torque is lacking. I down shifted into 4th on the highway and it fell on its face. Plus the back seats were tiny. After the test drive I told the guy it has nothing on the ST.

Fiesta ST is it's real competition. Weights 2720 lbs, 1.6 L, 197 hp/215 ftlb tq, I think both have Torsion beam rear suspension and price should be really close.

I looked at the VT before finding the ST and was only able to test drive a regular Veloster. I think one of the most crucial differences with the koreans vs the rest of the auto world at this point is the suspension and road noise. The regular Veloster uses the same suspension set up as the turbo'd version, so for my purposes I was able to see if the Veloster would work for me. Interior was sharp, had decent seats, but just about ZERO rear visability and big blind spots.

The handling I thought was great, with decent feedback in the steering wheel and even the base engine was peppy around town. Obviously it was underpowered when up to speed, but you just had to plan your merging and passing maneuvers.

That said.. the car was LOUD. When the test drive got us on a stretch of highway, I had to yell to the salesman in order for her to hear me. There was extrodinary amounts of road noise from the rear of the car, which made the drive annoying. Not to mention the terrible rear torsion beam suspension that crashes over bumps and potholes and created even more noise.

Ultimately, the refinement in the ST is what sold me. It's a wonderfully quiet and complacent vehicle on all types of road surfaces that can really tear up a back road when you want to. I'm happy to say I'm loving my base ST a little more every day.

I test drove the VT before I bought my ST and can pretty much echo the sentiments of those before me in this thread regarding it. A few additional notes; the fit and finish and materials of the interior were, in my opinion, far inferior to the ST. The door handle was creaky an plasticky, the buttons were clunky and the knobs didn't feel smooth. In short; it was a Hyundai. I've driven an import for almost a decade before this and that is par for the course. The interiors have come only a short way in the last ten years or so. The acceleration was quite good, but its not going to be pulling on an ST I don't think. Pricing here in Canada was pretty steep for a Veloster (I put a deposit on my ST during Ford Employee Pricing so it was cheaper than the VT).

I was almost sold on VT until I started to understand the ST better. They really are the best trade offs (at least right now) between power and efficiency in a hot-hatch (and also under $30K).

I also do remember bending oddly to access the base V's trunk when I test drove it. In retrospect, I'm pretty happy with my ST decision. Plus the wife liked the ST a lot better ("4 doors!", she would say).

Exactly, with a transmission made /assembled in Germany. 40% of parts are from North America.

Getrag, who built the transmission, is a 50/50 joint venture with Ford. Trust me, 100% of the profits of the Focus ST belong to Ford, and those profits are used to produce more vehicles that produce profits that stay in America. Fortunately this is one car where numbskulls don't have to justify their poor decisions with statements like "well, my <insert foreign car here> is assembled in the United States"...while all of the profits are funneled overseas and used to construct more vehicles that suck dollars away from the U.S. economy.

I think the Veloster looks cool. I'd take an ST over a Veloster all day long though, in Focus or Fiesta guise.

Having owned both this year (with an Si and EVO in between), the ST wins but it's closer than even I would have thought.

1. ST takes it, just. They are pretty close, but thanks to MFT, the ST edged out out.
2. ST. Recaros. Better quality materials in general (in the front)
3. Toss up but I'd say the Veloster edges it out. Subjective though.
4. No brainer here. ST
5. The Veloster is ok but again, a no brainer, ST.
6. MPG, Veloster, hands down so far.
7. Veloster on price and warranty. Ford warranty is terrible.

With all that said, the best thing so far is the handling. Even when compared to the EVO which really is apples to oranges, the ST is hard to beat. Turn in really is right now and is good with the stock rubber. Better than even the EVO and on par with with a tuned GTR I had the privilege of driving. Really outstanding. The immediate -not at the absolute limit- impression of its handling is actually closer to that of an Exige than anything else Ive driven.
