Hi!

As a lot of you have probably read in my other thread, I was going to do a Res delete, but after some careful thinking I want to go with a more refined sound, so I want to do a full cat back. Would like to see what you guys have on your cars, and hear your experiences. I want a system that isnt too much on the pricey side (under 800) with little to no drone. This is my daily, so I want to keep it pleasant in the cabin, but when I roll my window down under an overpass, I want to hear some nice sounds.

So far these are the candidates:

#1 Greddy
#2 Injen
#3 Cobb
#4 Thermal R&D
#4 Magnaflow

Keep in mind, I live in SoCal. I make occasional trips to Yosemite in the spring and summer, but beyond that, zero exposure to rust-causing conditions. No road salt, no snow, and I am far enough inland from the ocean that sea air isnt a problem.

Would love to hear your thoughts!

Sounds Very sexy, but with that loud rasp, I am concerned about some serious drone at highway speeds.

I have heard one in person, they are very nice. When I went to my local community trusted shop, the owner said buyer beware of borla products, he "does not, will not sell borla" because he said they make their tubing too thin and it tends to crack over the years.

Whether this is true, I do not know. If there is someone on here who has the borla on a high-mileage car, and has had it most of that time, I would like to hear their experience.

I am moving this exhaust up on the list, had no idea it was t304 all the way through!

Anyone familiar with this thread?... It is situations like these that scare the crap out of me when I want to do a mod. I could totally see a dealer (or my insurance, because I have an extended 6 year warranty through Mercury) saying "well, you put an exhaust on, the vibrations made the sensors go bad and them going bad made the wiring harness fail, sooooooo your not covered..."

I work at a dealer, and I work with aftermarket warranty companies all the time. I havent yet seen any issues where they denied a claim due to afermarket exhausts. Hell, we just got a customer with no service maintenance history, collected a fuel sample and found had bad fuel, car has 45k miles. The pistons cracked and scored the sidewall. Its gonna need a new engine and we are gonna warranty it. lol

GReddy. No vids, sold the car not too long after I installed, but (I think I've posted this multiple times today) it's the best sounding exhaust on the ST as far as I'm concerned. I'm not a brand snob, would have gone custom or from a smaller vendor without question, but I watched and listened to multiple vids for years trying to find an exhaust I liked and never found one until the GReddy came out.

#14 ·
Why did you sell the car, if you dont mind me asking.

I think I have the winner. I watched this video by RGBFIVE:

The exhaust sounds EXACTLY like I wanted. Lot of rumble in the cabin, but no drone, nice snap crackle pop outside, but not deafening.

Anybody have this exhaust? Do you daily your car, and how do you like it?

#20 ·
I only got about 1200 miles on the clock right now. Should I wait to change the exhaust encase something goes wrong that was factory related, but they use my exhaust as an excuse to get out of fixing it?

Anybody running Cherry Bomb? I heard a few clips of some cherry bomb mufflers in place of the stock resonator with the muffler deleted and it sounds amazing.

Alright guys, So I went down to Vista Ford where I bought the car today and they had a couple pre-tuned cars on the lot (brand new) for sale. One had borla, and the other had FRRP. I test drove both. I had no idea how much vibration is added by these 3 inch systems.... I dont like it. I just want a more audible tone from the back, I dont want the entire back of the car to vibrate like a sub woofer on maximum settings.

I am taking another look at MBRP... I dont like seeing that some people have had issues with build quality, but their system has a nice, low tone, that isnt overly aggressive, and the cost doesnt break the bank. So, because of my findings, CNT and MBRP have been moved to the top of the list because of their noise level, tone, and cost.

I want the car to have a sporty tone, but not feel like i am riding in something that is a race car with license plates.

So, here are the new requirements:

-Quiet, but louder than stock
-Not too much vibration
-NO DRONE
-Low cost (max price 500 dollars)

I am open to the idea of custom exhaust applications. If you have a custom muffler setup (welded in an individual set of mufflers/resonators, deleted parts of the exhaust, etc) please post video clips and list part numbers. Anything helps!

This car is my daily, I really want to keep it pleasant. I want the car to be quiet when normal driving, but if I rev the engine under and overpass or get on it, I want it to sound nice.

I know i am probably asking for the impossible here... and if I am please let me know and Ill save myself the headache and stop looking. Though that would be very disappointing...

Cheers!

Yeah they had Mountune RMM also installed. would that effect the vibrations of the exhaust in the cabin alot?

#37 ·
@StevenST so I called Greddy today.... not good news.. they are back ordered out to late September!... So Its down to cobb or thermal... I am not a fan of the thermal tip though... Injen sounds just like the Greddy, and they are available... but the tips are U-G-L-Y ricer blue. (no offense to anyone who likes that, just isnt my taste IMO)

You know any good alternatives to Greddy? or should I bite the bullet and wait.

Update:

So Okay guys. Dear old Dad has stepped into the decision making process here. He is COMPLETELY against me getting any exhaust work done, he is old school and he thinks messing with a new car in any way is a big nono. However I have sweet talked (argued and nagged) him into letting me do it... but heres the thing, the exhaust note has to be pleasing to him. I am living under the "my house my rules" policy.. and he HATES the ford performance and borla/roush kits, says they sound too loud and like a diesel truck.... He likes the Cobb, but the thermal rd, he thinks are too raspy. I am going to show him CNT tomorrow.. but I am a bit concerned with the build quality and R&D put into it. Its a cheaper system, so that might mean less research and development was put into it and it is made of lesser material. I have seen some people on youtube having issues with their tips rattling.

MBRP is out, my buddy around the corner has it and it drones like HELL, and hes not even running a DP.

So... I am left with only one...well... two options if I consider CNT... but I want to shy away from any of the cheap stuff... so its Cobb or CNT..oh! and Magnaflow, they are in the running too.

Flowmaster is out, too loud by his opinion.

If there are any other Middle-of-the-road semi-quiet systems like these that arent overly aggressive, that I might have missed. Please list them. And if you have sound clips from both interior and exterior that will help a lot in the decision making process.
@StevenST I will show him Greddy tomorrow after work, no worries ;) But I fear he will have the same outlook, too loud/raspy. But fingers crossed.

Look at Milltek. The unresonated version checks every box but price. A louder than stock idle/rumble and just really "stock plus 1" untill you actually stomp on it where beats out the likes of mountune. Most of the fury is within a narrow range of 2500rpm and 4000rpm so it's a peach on the highway. Sometimes i wish it was louder but a down pipe could possibly fix that a bit.

Wow! Thanks for responding guys! Love your videos. I just personally dont like the Thermal sound, for the same reason I didnt like the Greddy too much: bubble sound at idle and decel. I like the cracks and pops to be very sharp, and the Borla is more aggressive while not being overly loud. I did talk to Jason over at Thermal though, and we went back and forth a bit to the point where he was offering free installation if I drove out to Lancaster.....tempting..... If you guys think I am making a huge mistake, let me know, I will hold off until I can hear a thermal in person. BTW I live in SoCal (ventura county) if you live close by would love to hear your car regardless of what I install.

Also, something to note: Borla is a bit on the quieter side when slow driving, which is something I need because I live in a residential area and I leave for work around 6:30am and my city does have a noise ordinance that lasts 10pm-7am and that exhaust sounded HELLA loud when you did the follow in the video. I have heard borla exhausts from the same perspective and they sound half as loud.

Regards,

-Patrick

Okay guys....

I think I have made my decision. Borla

Reasoning: my dealer installs these to their cars right off the truck for their special pre-tuned cars. So they have experience with it. Also, I prefer the idle tone and higher rpm sound of the borla to the Greddy. The Greddy to me is too bubbly at idle and the backfire "burble" isnt as sharp in sound as the borla. It was a close match between Cobb and Borla, but Borla won outright because Cobb is a bit too quiet of a note, and it produces more drone than the borla in the cabin.

If anyone has had a bad experience with Borla, now is the time to post about it. I will be purchasing and having the system installed either later this week or early next week, I will post pictures and video when its done.

Cheers!

I think i am going to go either Magnaflow or Borla. Leaning now towards magnaflow, it has that same deep tone, but its much quieter and less annoying to my neighbors, and it still has crackle and pops, but they are more mild....and its 300 dollars cheaper lol

I think you'll like the Magnaflow. I run their cat back with a catted Cobb downpipe and it's got a nice split personality. It's loud when you want it to be and quiet when you're just cruising or trying to creep through your neighborhood after coming home late. Highway drone is very minimal and holding a conversation with passengers is no problem.
