I took photos of everything and I’m at the timing phase. Below is a pic of my engine prior to the taking apart

The Manuel says to rotate them to where the I can use the timing tool but the slots are vertical not horizontal….thoughts?

Tagging @Damond Motorsports since he seemed to know a lot about this (or at least he has a million cam buckets on hand for some reason). Hoping you can get a good answer tomorrow morning, Matt.

I just figured he could help with the timing questions regarding the slots being vertical and not horizontal like you were expecting since he seems to have done this a few times (based on the hardware he's got laying around). I imagine he's hit that before and knows what's going on with it, and I'd trust his input on the solution.

🤦‍♂️you gotta rotate the cams dude. Pull them out and place them back in where the slots are horizontal and align with the timing plate.

If you have CYL 1 at TDC, make sure you put the cams in correctly before tightening down the caps. If you do this incorrectly you run the risk of bending valves.

I would honestly suggest setting the pistons to middle of the stroke across the board for setting valve bucket clearances. That way you can tun the cams willy-nilly without kissing the valves and pistons.

So l did that last night the intake cam is off just a little bit from the exhaust cam… thoughts

do you have the workshop manual it breaks down the steps to time the engine in the most simplest way possible. assuming you have the tools. (timing plate for the cams and TDC pin for the crank. if you don't have the manual pdf it's posted in the thread here.

The camshaft slots are off center slightly. The cam lobes on cylinder 1 intake and exhaust should point upwards at each other somewhat when the flat slots in the camshaft are in the right place. You may have to rotate slightly using the hex nut on the camshafts to achieve perfect alignment to slide the tool in.

You ever figure out the hex nut size so you could rotate the cams and get the timing fixed? Guess if you had to you could just get a crescent wrench and adjust it as necessary to work..
