I saw a couple of posts about wind/buffeting with or without a fairing for their rack, but can anyone else please give some feedback on this? I'm considering a rack and worried about buffeting with the sunroof open. Thanks.
I'm currently shopping for a fairing myself, but to give you some feedback, when I don't have any attachments on the racks themselves, you barely notice them there, with the sunroof open you hear a little bit of wind but nothing crazy. Now with an attachment on the racks, they start to get a bit noisy. With that being said what size and type of fair were you looking at? I like the look of the fairing and would think it has to help with wind/mpg

Thanks. I'm looking at a Thule rack with the aero bars. The guy in the shop said he didn't think I'd need a fairing, but I'll see how it goes without one. A funny thing that happened with my Honda Fit is that with no attachments on the rack it made noise but as soon as you added attachments the noise stopped! Strange. Anyway I guess I'll see how this goes and try a fairing if it's noisy.

Hahaha that is strange!!! let us know how it works out!! The roof racks are pricey so I know every attachment is a killer at times but I love the look and functionality!!

Hi I'm a previous owner of an ST that I had to get rid of. I'm selling my Ford euro cross bars. I had to special order them from the UK. I think I paid $300 for them. Looking to sell them for $150 plus shipping costs. They are in good condition with expected wear from two years of use (nothing substantial). Message me if you're interested

I can now answer my own question and give a bit of a review on the Thule Aerobar rack. Unfortunately with just the rack there was quite a bit of wind noise with the sunroof open. You could still hear it a bit with it closed but if you closed the shade thing you couldn't hear it. I put one of the Thule wind fairings on to try and help but it didn't really improve it much. I would say unless you're doing the fairing for looks (I did think it looked cool) it's not worth the money. And now I've just mounted my bike rack and kayak mount thing, both of which happen to be Yakima, but fit fine. The bike rack didn't really affect the wind noise but the kayak mount made it worse. So I may take the kayak mount off unless I'm using it since it only took a couple of minutes to attach anyway.

Can I put a rack on and then a box in the middle and a bicycle on each side? And what will that do to my hwy mpg?

Idk if that can be made, but I think it should be possible. Your mpg will most likely drop dead though.

I guess if I'm going to plummet to 22mpg or less I'll just take the old man truck and be comfortable and roomy for the trip and get 16mpg. When we got the focus instead of a Lincoln SUV the trade-off was that we would probably still be using the truck for some trips. That or we could leave the cycles at home.

Sure, just depends on the size box you choose, some are pretty wide. I would suggest a setup like thule aeroblade/evo wing where they have the in channel mounts for the bike rack. That would allow you to position the bike over the roof mounts and not lose that real-estate. You could probably also get slightly longer cross bars too.

See how the bike mount in this pic attaches/sits on top vs the ski rack? Most newer boxes clamp/mount over the bar (makes installing super easy though.) Some bike mounts clamp and others are in channel.

I have Thule Pulse box, which is pretty large/wide. I dont think i would be able to fit a pair of bikes when the box is centered over the standard bars. Crappy cell pic but zoom in and you'll see lack of space for a bike on the standard bars with that box

As for MPG, yes expect that to go down but it wasnt terrible. I think i have my box noted in my fuelly in my sig. I last had the box on in August, look around there for the notes on mpg. I get terrible mpg anyways but think i still saw around 27 with the box on the hw. also remember the roof has like a 165lb max, so if your bikes are heavy and you load the box up, you could easily pass that

Already there on EU and UK cars mate, the grommet is a rubber washer and a plastic insert, then the pin from the roof rack sits inside to keep the rack from moving.

I can get a part number for you next time im down at the Ford dealer.
Daz can you still get ahold of this roof rack or anybody that's selling theirs ? I want one for my RS but no one is willing to ship to the us. Thanks

Not for those who can't drill holes in his baby :)
Finally found a good donor for roof rails. It is a previous Nissan Rogue! Personally I don't like the Thule or Rhino idea of mounting. So I started to look around to find the best donor for factory installed rails. Finally found - previous Nissan Rogue! Curvature almost perfect. Last week went to local junk yard to make a "proof of concept" project. Found 2016 hatch. What I found that beneath the roof there are places between welding points that looks like were specifically designed for installing roof rails. The front bracket from nissan fits almost perfectly. Once I drilled two holes on the other side there is reinforcement bar with matching stamped holes for washers and nuts.

Mounted! Will require minor work for precise adjustment.

Little more troublesome situation with the back. Still looks like the place was specifically designed for.

But the curvature of the reinforcement bar and roof panel slightly different from nissan. Rogue's roof more flat in cross-section view. And once you tighten bolts they twist the rear bracket.

Think of using some kind of wedge washers. (If somebody have an idea where to get - advise please) It should be something like f M6 or M8 washer with 3 to 5mm thickness difference. Finally cut the rail and mount it.

For test I've used Murano 2005, Rogue's rails has little more curved front brackets which is nice for our roof profile, slightly more curved rails and slightly elevated rear brackets. So now I'm looking for black rails. Already got silver ones from Rogue but want to get 'em in black. Need to put 3 bikes on the roof and 8-bolt mount looks more trustworthy for me. Will post the final build.
