I'm just curious because I have no idea. But would the hill start assist increase overall transmission life/performance by preventing the car from rolling backwards while engaging 1st gear ?
The way HA works is it's holding the brakes on, not the clutch so there's no wear.

I didn't like it at first, but I keep it on now. At lights I let the brakes release then catch the car with the clutch.

Yeah hill assist is a brake activated function and does not wear the clutch or anything like that. Also it is activated by a sensor in the vehicle to detect the incline you are on, not sure what the incline rate has to be for it to activate, but you can also turn this off. This feature is nothing but helpful, granted it isn't required to drive the car on hills, but why not have some extra help.

I turned mine off a few days after getting the car. Didn't like it at all.
Plus I don't really need it living on flat Long Island.

didn't know it was there. caused my first stall and my first burnout. disabled and never to be used again. it only works for a few seconds anyway right? then it releases.?

I hate the hill assist feature. I barely give any gas when I start in first, and HA has the tendency to stall the car because on a slight incline without much throttle input (the way I start moving), it thinks I'm rolling, so it brakes and it ain't pleasant! With it on, I have to give more gas (rev to 1300rpm or so). I'm probably saving my clutch by having it off.

Exactly what I'm seeing with my driving style since it takes a split second for the brakes to let go. I'm turning mine off today.

If you lived in SF you would have a very different opinion.

I live and drive in SF and I am so thankful for Hill Assist.

Take a look:

More Steeps Of San Francisco ? A New Steepest Street Is Born

Get yourself on one of those streets wedged in between a cable car on your left, a parked car on your right, an angry honking driver behind you, and a tourist in front of you who doesn't know their ass from a hole in the ground and suddenly you are thanking the car gods for Hill Assist.

Ok - do all ST's have hill assist? According to what I found on line mine has a build date of Oct, 2012. I cannot find any menu on my display for hill assist and I can tell it isn't on because I was rocking back and forth at a stop light tonight.

All 12 and newer Foci have hill assist. My ST was built in Oct 12 and has it.

That being said, I have been driving manuals for over 40 years. I gave it several thousand miles to get used to it and just never did so I turned it off.

Weird because under my information display I have Lighting, Display, Conveinence, and My Key. I do not have, or cannot find, Drivers Assist or System Reset where the on/off settings are per the Manual I found on-line. Bought mine used and didn't get a manual. VIN = 100088 so not sure if that is a low # or not.

I tried it, but noticed it had a delay to it, felt like I was holding the brake while hitting the gas. I also tended to chirp the tires more with it on. I am in Colorado, lots of hills. I turned it off, as I think it could be better.

The feature took me a few thousand miles to get used to. Like others At first I was just biding my time and planned to turn it off, but it has been helpful more than hindering for me, especially on steep driveways and roads where there are cars parked just a foot away. I think it's usefulness really depends on the area you live and parking/driving situations you find yourself in often. Ill be leaving it on for some time I think
