Dealer insists on using 5w-20 oil!!!

So, I brought my car ('13 OW ST3) in for its 2nd oil change at 16,000 km ( ~10,000 miles). I get home and see that they've used 5w-20 oil where the supplementary manual says 5w-30 is required. I called them back inform them of this error that I've discovered and they feed me some bs about "Ford recommend(s) [ing] 5w-20 for Canadian cars as the climate is colder". I'm fairly sure this is not the case as, at operating temperatures, the viscosity would be independent of ambient temperature. Maybe if they said 0w-30 in winter months only, i'd be more convinced. I realize that there have been several threads on this very topic so what I'm looking for is some input from Canadians in colder climates (I don't want to hear from any of you bastards in BC!! haha :) ). Have any of y'all been given the work around??

As things stand, I'll just do the change myself. This is a huge inconvenience as I work way too much to do a service myself that I have paid for in advance (5 year/100km maintenance)!!:furious:

I live in NH and prefer 0w-20 for two reasons. A) It flows better than a heavier weight oil on that cold morning start, and that's where most engine friction happens. 0-20 gets to the bearings and lifters faster than 5-30. Also, better fuel economy with the reduced friction of the crank-case splash and pumping losses compared to heavier weight oil.

I ran 0W-20 in my 2008 SES, but I'm not familiar enough with this engine to deviate, or allow the dealer to deviate from the factory recommendation. At this point, through friendly, but firm persuasion (I photocopied the page out of the supplement and leave it in the driver's seat when I drop the car) my dealer service writers know me on sight and makes sure it's done right. I also try to always get the same mechanic because he understands me and takes proper care.

The 2.0 NA takes that oil, they missed the listing for the Ecoboost engine.

Not, uncommon, go to the service manager and calmly show him the supplement.
If he does not satisfy you, find the General Manager.

Your goal should be to have it corrected, don't bother insulting and demeaning them, they are used to that.

Moral of the story: You have a specialty vehicle that they may never see. Take a bit of responsibilty to get it right before they screw up.
Like going to the doctor, if you just accept everything without questions or research, you will get the result you deserve.

The supplement even lists oil for Canada, and it's 5-30.

Real Canadians are watching Curling.:fordsmilie::ford::focus-st-smilie::tree::nx:

5w20 is not going to hurt your engine at all.

Unless they put in 4.5qts per the 2.0NA instead of the 5.7qts in the Ecoboost.
They couldn't be that stupid, could they?

I think the easiest thing is to just get it right.

My cap says 5w-20.

Glad you caught it. My fiance was taking care of it for me, and she ended up driving home (about 5 miles). I always check the dipstick if I have some one else do the oil change and when she got home it was barely on the stick. I pulled the RO out and saw the extra quarts in the back then I...made a few phone calls. I was a little upset that day and my fiance learned the importance of checking the dipstick "even at the dealership".

I never ever use the dealership for anything unless it's absolutely necessary or it's warranty work. I have an oil change place that I've been going to for years. it's faster and they get it right.

Thats why I've done my own oil changes on every single vehicle I've owned.

But that's not the case for OP.
There is a difference between getting shorted a quart and getting 5w-20 instead of 5w-30.

Either way it isnt a huge deal. Your engine won't seize up if you are a quart low.

You know what is more productive in situations like this? Going to the dealer, showing them what they did wrong and if they don't fix it, go somewhere else. Change the oil yourself if it bothers you that much.
But realistically no dealer is going to waste time changing oil for free just because their tech added 5w20 instead of 5w30.

It should be noted that Motorcraft 30w semi syn is a light 30 and has been shown to shear down to 20w levels after the VII molecules get used up, and any fuel dilution that may occur. Starting at a 20w would surely shear to a 10w, which given the stresses the oil sees at the pump, the buckets and in the turbo, is too thin at temp to be considered reliable. It's best you get that changed to a 30w before long. Cold viscosities are fine at 0w or 5w (I run 0 myself), but heated viscosity is quite critical in a boosted motor.

As an "enthusiast" aka "informed owner", who wants his car to last a long time, but living in an apartment and therefore dependent on the dealer for oil changes, I was careful to point out that my car is a Focus ST and has different oil requirements than a standard Focus. I'm not looking for any freebies, but if they blow me off and get it wrong, they will be correcting it on their own dime, even if it means tossing 5.7 quarts of 5 minute old 5W-20.

I was actually just at my dealership for an oil change about 15 minutes ago and when I got the work order back it said 5w20 so I brought it up with them before I signed and showed them the ST brochure and they brought out the person that they had change the oil and he reassured me that he used 5w30 and that the parts people just labeled it wrong on the paperwork. I had to make sure because my last change for sure said 5w30. They gave me no story or bs about winter oil though. It was basically just them apologizing about the mistake and forth the fact that I would've had to wait longer for them to drain the car.

I just had my first oil change done this past week, when I saw this thread I went and looked at the paper work. It said 5W 30 but didn't say how many quarts. So I checked it and was a little low. Since all I have is the Motorcraft 5W 20 I use in my Mustang, topped it off with that. Was about 1/2 - 3/4 of a quart low

Ok I run Mobil 1 0W-40 in my st, I have 30k on as of now and I'm very lucky to do all the work on my car, I do not take it to the dealer unless it is a warranty item, I keep all reciepts and logs of all oil changes. I do not trust dealers, this is not manufacture specific, If you can find a good mechanic, please by all means stick with him or her. I do not want this taken the wrong way I'm not saying there is not good dealers out there, if you find one stick with them. I do this because I can and I love working on thing, and if something goes wrong shame on me. lol
