10,000 miles it blew up

After fixing suspension noise and took for a test ride. car was driving fine and all of the sudden misfire on cylinder 4. Inspected it and this is what happened. Car was running on a stage 3 93 oct tune from cobb. Car has cobb FMIC, cobb intake, cobb 3" downpipe, 3" agency power exhaust. Took it to get fixed and wasnt in warranty and ford wanted to charge me 10k for a new engine. NO thanks so i went to a local shop who specializes in turbo cars. He told me cylinder #4 was running to lean and got to hot and gave out. Said there was no way u can run a stage 3 like that without supporting mods a high flow fuel pump and bigger injectors. Made me a one off set of custom forged pistons saved about 2.5k. While it was there had them install my new Quaife LSD and clutch.
This shop guy is an idiot and I wouldn't have let him change my oil, there's a ton of guys running stock fuel on stage 3 and even big turbos, I'd keep an eye on that injector.
my guess is we have a high failure rate on the injectors cause this is getting more common.


I'm sorry to say but if you spent 7500$ for pistons, you got taken advantage of HUGELY and it's not going to fix a bad injector..

Yep. We are not seeing lean conditions with the stock pump.....I would guess this was an injector issue. Let see some pic of these "one off custom forged pistons"

A lack of fuel system capability would show lean conditions under load and across the board , the fact that most of these failures are in one cylinder under low load points to a faulty injector, I believe ford knows this and is the reason most guys are getting a new motor under warantee.. We may even see some kind of tsb or recall if this gets more common

I am wondering what kind of weather he was going for a test drive in as well, most likely WOT? I have seen quite a few "newbies" to boost flog it in cold conditions where they are not tuned for and melt a hole in piston(s) from running too lean. Cyl 4 seems to be the hotter cyl of our motor and if running too lean that would be the first to start breaking down. I am starting to notice a trend of cold weather and melted pistons, could be faulty injector but haven't seen too many issues in fair weather other than the guy that sprayed into rev limit. Just a thought.
 
Mechanical things will always have a % of failed parts. 4 total people I have heard to this point with issues out of over 8000 that's a VERY small % at this point. yes it sucks when stuff fails but at this point I don't think we are looking at a major issue.

Time will tell.

I'd be curious to know how many cars with the 2.0 Ecoboost other than the Focus have blown motors (on stock tunes).
 
Because the guy probably hasn't checked back or subscribed to this thread to confirm.

You can buy a new engine for $7k from Ford.
It will take much more then just buying pistons to fix the engine.
Sure seems to me like he got his car fixed for $7,500(=math). And included in the $7500 he got custom forged pistons which would not have been included in the $10k quote. And on top of that he got his new Quife and clutch installed for the $7500.
 
This shop is just making a single set of pistons? seems fishy....why not release them to everyone?

Car and Year: '13 Focus ST
Mileage: 18,000
What failed - piston, rod, injector etc?: Unetermined - Coolant in number 4.
Modifications and tune: Stage 3 91 OCT Cobb
Under what circumstances did it fail (WOT, cruising, what did you hear and feel?): Driving down road, suddenly no power and limps. Misfiring HARD.
Any signs prior to failure?: Check engines for a few cold days.
Warranty?: TO be determined. He was denied warranty coverage at his dealer, so I made sure there was no record of his visit and Took him to My dealer.

Pics submitted to Tech Support waiting on Approval. Will be covered, car is now bone stock.
 
yes I noticed that...not your typical melted piston.

detonation will get the far ends of the piston like that, as that's the location of the pre ignition......
