I am buying an 16' KB ST2 tomorrow. Why the hell am I doing this? There are hundreds of pages of mechanical problems with this car?? It's a total crapshoot on whether you get a good one or not. I drive 40k miles a year. Take them to 200k and trade them in. I love these stupid cars though !!!! These forums have me scared to death.

If your asking yourself questions like that then you made the wrong choice in car.

Buy it! Life is a crap shoot... May as well enjoy it.
With that said, naturally people with issues complain about it. Therefore any forum is weighted with issues if it has been around for any significant amount of time.

If you like the car, and want to go 200k on it, stay stock (well outside of replacing the intercooler which I think it's a safer option either way). And perform maintenance at regular intervals (and NOT every 10k if you are driving that much, do 5k).

Are you planning to modify? I wouldn't bet on 200k... But hey! There are modded STs with well over 100k on these forums.

Would keep drivetrain stock, looking at a couple appearance mods. Do you think the CEL with misfires are on modded cars only??
I know for a fact my 2015 ST3 with zero mods threw a CEL for misfiring. Dealership did a computer reset, told me to come back if it happens again.

A little after that experience it did not come back, I am not worried. I am now driving the car aggressively and modded with just the COBB Stage 1 off the shelf tune, still safe no CEL. Albeit im only 12500 km but it is not as repeating and dreadful for me as others have been through. There may be situations where the misfiring is an ongoing issue that is truly problematic, but I bet the majority of the reported experiences are similar to mine. Realistically there are a thousand variable factors in place that can cause a misfire (let alone the complications in accurately reading a misfire) that it is bound to occur occasionally with a turbo charged set up.

I haven't tracked all accounts... But I'd say more than a majority on these forums ARE modded in some way (the mod bug hits hard if you stick around). If you check the blown motor thread there is a Google sheet that tracks all reported incidents. Again though... This is REPORTED to these forums it doesn't take into account the thousands of STs roaming the streets that sadly have no clue these forums exist.

Ford offers an extended warranty up to 100k... Take it! Run it hard, and use the warranty if needed. It seems most chronic issues show up within 15k so truthfully the stock warranty would probably cover you.

Put it this way. It's going to seem like these cars have a lot of issues because people will report issues to get them resolved, or they just had a bad experience, so you won't really see the number of people who don't have issues. Basically, my car has been tuned since 5000 miles, intercooler and increased boost. with a host of other things. my car now has 75k miles and the only thing I have ever done to the car are oil changes and routine maintenance. I'm not easy on my car either, I do track my car and carry close to above 400-600 lbs of cargo every week in it. I always use shell gas because the nitrogen additives can help keep the injector nozzles clean which is very important. Once I hit 100k miles, i'm going to have the intake valves and host of other things cleaned of carbon deposits. I would recommend getting the Mountune breather plate install since it helps separate the oil from the vapors in the engine.

Watch these 3 YouTube videos from engineering explained. A lot of issues are from people who drove their car incorrectly and damaged the engine because of it.

I don't see any reason you shouldn't buy this car unless you don't like front wheel drive.

Keep in mind....most people only seek out and join a forum because they're having a problem and are seeking a solution...or a place to vent. Think about all the ST owners out there (like me) that have had no issues and are therefore quiet because they're not a member of a forum. I've had mine for 18 months - nothing wrong here.

I've had buyer's remorse and anxiety before. But not about this car. As soon as I got in it to drive it home, I felt like I was with an old, trusted friend.

I'm just a keyboard hero...
I've had a few problems with my car and those issues were taken care of quickly. Every vehicle is different (we all know this)
But its a great question to ask yourself: "do i really need this car for what i'm doing?" Its a simply answered by a "yes" or "No"

Feel free to ask question, this forum is the best thing in the last three yrs.

Like a few have already said on here the internet and forums are a way for members to vent and complain. Negativity outweighs positivity is every aspect of the internet. The way I found out about the ST was a person posted his car on the local forums and I fell in love. I didn't even need a new car but I was really impressed by the ST. I looked around on CL for about a week or 2, found a reasonably priced one, went to look at it and decided within 100 feet of driving the car that I was buying it.

I imagine Fiesta STs have less documented problems on forums because there are WAY less of them driving around than Focus STs. I see one FiST for every 15-20 FoST.
