What happened to my clutch pedal?

As driving home from work and took my foot off the clutch and it made a snapping noise. Now it's sitting higher than my brake pedal.

When pressing the first bit of travel is soft and doesn't do anything before it gets back to its regular position.

What broke? It looks like it's now resting against that piece of metal on top... This something I can fix on my own?

It's not like I can't drive my car but it's super weird and annoying....

Anyone else have this weird hyper extension happen?

It looks like the assist spring (not sure what its called, the white plastic piece with the spring around it) looks bent. That is responsible for keeping the clutch pedal upright and not resting on the hydraulic system. Perhaps the spring or the plastic piece broke and its stuck in the upright position?

It is definitely not the return spring, they cannot bend, only break.

It looks like that nub on the top of the pedal arm is not contacting the metal crossbar as it should.

Try googling focus st return spring and look at the images, see if that might give you a clue as to what is going on under there.

Weird. Still under warranty?

Extended service plan. So $100 deductible. 40k miles.

So when i give it a push with my hand the spring does wobble.

Would someone mind taking a picture of a healthy setup and posting it? Wonder if it's that spring assembly or something else that keeps it from overextending.

I don't see any bits of plastic or anything on the floor.

I'll do some more googling. Found a jalopnik article about removing the spring to change the pedal feel.

clutch pedal problem

this just happened to me also at just over 3 years and 58000 km. The problem isn't with the spring. There is a plastic rod connecting the pedal
to the clutch master cylinder, and this broke. Ford charged me $800 to replace the pedal assembly because it's just outside warranty, and there is a lot of labour
to get access to the part. The replacement pedal assembly has a metal rod, so obviously there is a problem. I'd like to know how many other people have had this problem.

I'm almost 40 and have not seen any of the F+F movies...

Anyhow, I took the spring out and now the pedal no longer hyperextends. Instead it sags a bit. Feel is heavier and has less travel.

Would anyone mind taking a quick picture of a regular setup to make sure I'm not missing anything else? Otherwise I'll go with the spring assembly to see if I can get it replaced...
