Thanks for your opinions guys. I filled it up with 89, because i looked at the price of 93 and it was over 50 cents more a gallon compared to 87. Being in the winter, I wont be romping on it as hard... and yes it would only be 100$ more a year, but is it really necessary? I am not sure. I honestly think i've noticed a difference in power from using 89 to 93. (93) was put in the car when i got it. But it could just be in my head.

I am averaging close to 26MPG, mostly highway right now. I havent been that frugal on my shifts though, typically shifting between 2-3 rpm. (I just got the car im not going to drive it like a grandma)

I want to use 93, but I feel like it might be a waste of money in the long run. What im going to do, is next tank, going to fill up with 93 and see if there is a difference in mileage. If its more than 2mpgs, I might just stick with 93

With this current garbage winter blend you and I are dealing with, it makes a difference as well. Do the test again after April and you'll definitely notice the power difference if you have a good sense for it. Best of luck with your findings!

Garbage 87 or garbage 93?
I've been filling it with 87 since Thanksgiving when I got the car...I get about 18mpg (Disappointing to me). I want to try out 93 as well, which is a pricey difference here too.

ALL fuel is garbage in the winter. Stations change blends every 3 months (aligns with seasons basically) and in the winter it's super bad. Put 93 in your tank and you car reads it as 89-87 because that's how much octane is actually in it. Don't remember the exact reason off hand, but it's bad stuff.

Edit: If you got your car brand new, it'll get better MPG after a while from what I hear. Also, expect MUCH better mpg in the spring/summer. Mine is down 3-6mpg. This isn't just for our cars either. All cars will suffer from it if you pay attention. My supervisor at work who knows little about cars said the other day "this winter gas is killing my gas mileage with my v6."

If thats the case, im going to use 93 in the winter, and might go to 87 or 89 in the spring-fall

Good to hear it will get better. I guess I'll try out the 93 and see if it's worth it for now. And then in the spring I'll compare 87 and 93 again. I've only been getting 200-240 miles to the tank lately!

I'm tuned for 93 and at times I get corrections on my tune and my Octane Adjust Ratio changes for the crappy fuel. So bad sometimes that I can put Octane Booster in it to get it back to 93. Sad life we live with our winter blend and performance cars. Stock cars won't notice it as bad, but it's definitely gross fuel compared to summer. I averaged 240 miles my last tank grannying it.

oh man... here we go with the octane wars again.

If your bone stock, yes you can safely and continuously run 87 octane without any issues. I've done it for many many miles before getting tuned.
You will lose top end power, but maintain the same torque. You will not have the crazy insane knock knock boom nightmare everyone is saying. The engine will begin to retard timing before any serious
knock occurs thus losing steam past 5k.

Remember guys this is the EB from the 2.0 Ford Fusion, it was intentionally and originally designed to safely run 87.

If you want to run 93, you can do so for improved performance if you are stock. When you are tuned run exactly what your tuner recommends or else your engine says the phrase every terrorist says in their final moments and then explodes.

In-fact even more so if you are stock, trust exactly what your ST supplement/engineers say over everyone's opinion here, like mine that carries no weight or substance. Two people to trust are your Ford Engineers and respective tuners. Everyone elses opinion on here, including mine is invalid. I'm just referencing the ST supplement and Tuner recommendations.
Simple enough lol?

Nobody started that war or said anything different, but thanks for re-explaining.

If anyone wanted to reread what I said here ya go! :whs:

There ya go, or even better, the OP can use this magnificent tool called the "Search Tool". Which has about 21093821093809213809128309 posts on Octane. Lol

BTW, there isn't a war right now but there will be sooner or later just like with every other Octane related post.

I'm confused as to why y'all think winter blend gas is crappy as opposed to summer. Winter blend is what they used to make year round until the EPA got involved and made the refiners use less butane in the blend for the summer time. As for octane, it's illegal for refiners to sell gasoline that has less octane than what is stated on the pump.

Good response, however it isn't simple for me... If the gas mileage is better in 93 octane, i would be tempted to use that just because i feel its better for the car (even though i guess it technically doesnt matter) but it makes me feel better running the best fuel in the car, however if the gas mileage doesn't really improve i wont use it

What mininsx said above is true. Summer fuel is mandated by the EPA, specifically to lower evaporative emissions. The main thing that refiners do with winter fuel is to raise the vapor pressure. This allows the fuel to vaporize more easily when cold, which helps engines to start more reliably. Try starting a carburated engine in 0* temps on summer fuel...it won't be easy. Winter fuel isn't any lesser "quality" than summer, but it does have a slightly different chemical makeup...primarily because more butane is used in the blend, which has a higher vapor pressure. It also has a lower BTU content, which results in slightly lower fuel economy. Cold startups, more idling, cold tires, increased drag due to higher air density, and lower BTU fuel all combine to decrease fuel economy in the winter.

If the pump says 93, it will be 93 octane fuel, all year long. Now, keep in mind that our octane rating system in North America is the (R+M)/2 method, which is different than most other countries, who go strictly by Research octane. (R+M)/2=AKI or Posted Octane Number. The Research or Motor octane numbers may move around a bit throughout the year, but the two still combine to generate 93 AKI/Posted octane. These slight changes could possibly cause your engine to be a bit more picky, but it shouldn't be significant.
