Weird clutch feel

404 Views 17 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  MtnMan
So I got my clutch finally bled well but I got a weird issue where my clutch gets hard randomly. So I started looking at master cylinder reservoir when it got hard to push and the fluid rose above the max line when the pedal felt hard. I also notice my brakes can get super touchy at times. Is this a sign of a failing master cylinder because I don’t know why my clutch does this? I was thinking about replacing vacum pump as well.

Does it typically happen after you've been cruising for a while? I have that issue with my clutch from time to time after I've been running along for several miles without shifting.

Not sure what causes it.
Ya it does do it after I’m cruising sometimes. Other times it’ll be random in the city.
Do you still have the stock rubber clutch line?
It has a restrictor and small orifice that can fail.

Vacuum assist is for brakes, not the clutch.

Other option is something else is sticking internally or similar idea.

I deleted both of the restrictors and have a stainless line.

Mine gets stiff when it's a hot day and I've driven for more than 20 minutes. I've always thought it was the restrictor, the plastic getting hot and expanding into its orifice. Maybe the stock slave cylinders are a bit wonky.

Do your brakes get super touchy in the morning?

Ya they do
That's normal. Moisture in the brake pads. Some brake pads do it more than others. I found the OEM Fords are pretty bad about it.

Ah makes sense I’ll change them out eventually. I just wanna figure out why my clutch randomly gets stiff lmao.

You could also try changing to a braided line, like other have said. That should just be something you do as maintenance at this point.

FWIW, I'm at 68k now. Replaced clutch master and pedal assembly at 63k after it leaked on floor mat.

Previously replaced clutch line at 54k with clutch masters.

Clutch action always seems good and consistent so far, other than the first time I tried to bleed it until I got all the air out. 😊😁

Edit:
What about the hill assist? I tend to forget about it, as I turned it off soon after I got the car. It doesn't effect the clutch feel itself, but can feel quite different taking off at times. 🤔
