Anyone ever have an issue where, after filling up, car starts then wants to stall out? I have not done any logging or anything but I have to give it some gas, then it'll run fine. I only have this issue when getting gas. After that, every start up is normal. I also notice that there is a suction when inserting the fuel pump. Could it be the fuel pump? I also get wrong gas gauge readings. It'll go from quarter of a tank back up to a half a tank, then back down throughout driving. 50k miles, 2014 ST.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks!

Look under your car; is the gas tank starting to cave in? There was an issue with the purge valves, I believe, that would cause eratic idle/weird gauge readings/visually collapsing gas tank.

There is a recall on the wiring harness which is generally the cause of the irratic idle and stalling. The gas gauge issue is likely related to TSB 13-12-04. Have you gotten code P0456? Check your build date, if it is on or before 7/28/2013, the TSB applies. I had a heck of a time getting my local dealer to acknowledge my car was impacted. I would see that gas gauge go from 3/4 to less than 1/8 and back to 1/2 within 5 miles. After the they fixed a small evap leak due to a crack canister, its been perfect.

Mine did it yesterday , but it's because you too it off I think. It only does it to me when I top it off and it spills under the car

It's the purge valve.

If you have rough idle and/or stalling immediately after filling up, it's the purge valve.

The purge valve will have to be replaced and the line between the EVAP canister and the purge valve will have to be cleaned out. Also check for raw fuel in the canister, if any is found, the canister will have to be replaced.

The normally closed purge valve can cause the tank to collapse if it is stuck open since it is open to engine vacuum but typically the normally open vent valve would have to close at the same time. If the purge valve alone fails open and the normally functioning vent valve is open, it will just pull fresh air out of the vent into the engine. This will cause drive-ability issues but typically will not cause a tank issue.

If you have vacuum being released when the nozzle opens the flap, the vent valve is likely staying closed. Which will cause the tank to collapse and your fuel tank readings will be off. Typically the fuel gauge will stay in one spot because the float is pinned against the tank. If the fuel gauge is fluctuating it is likely because there is excessive vacuum in the tank.

Do you 'Top Off' the tank when filling up?
The evap canister could become fouled. that would need replacing.

There was a recall for some models due to the chrome plating flaking off and clogging the line.
Could be from bad gas to.
Good luck finding the issue.

Did you ever figure out what the issue was? My 2015 does this too. Exact same symptoms.

On the ST’s that issue is caused by a faulty purge valve. There is a recall for it.

I‘m not sure if the recall applies to non-ST’s. If it does, just replace it yourself...simple 20 minute job.

purge valve recall applied to many vehicles. My brother had to take in his focus see. I'd take it to the dealer. Just uninstall your tune before you take it in if you have one.

Dealership replaced mine under warranty for the same issue. Got the check engine light code that was added during the recall.

Mine is doing the same. I’m replacing the purge valve for the 3rd time. When I replace it then the problems stop for a couple months. I have a 2012 focus se.
