Great write up. Install of my Escort MAX was VERY easy while not tapping in to factory wiring!

I can't stand seeing wires, so I went for the low profile look. Might limit rear radar some, but it still picks them up to my liking.

Great instructions and pics...I used these instructions with the below attachment mount to. secure it to the rear view mirror, it's a very well built mount

Make sure you order the "mini" add-a-fuse if you are going to use the fuses under the glove box. I ordered the standard add-a-fuse and it was too big

You should be just fine picking up rear radar as long as you have a good clear view ahead and your max is level. Only the V1 has an actual rear facing second antenna, Escort and whistler products only have forward facing antennas so when you pick up radar from the rear it's usually because the antenna is picking up reflections off of objects in front of you like other cars, trees, overpasses etc. Escorts have those little lenses on top that face the rear but those are for laser reception, and usually by the time a radar detector screams laser it's already time to pull over unless you got lucky and picked up some scatter off of another vehicle being targeted. So again just make sure detector is nice and level and pointed straight ahead.

My bad. Didn't mean to post the Corolla pic here. I shouldn't forum post while waiting in a drive thru.

Just a quick question.. Don't police in the states have Radar Detector Detectors?

I am asking from the point of view of someone living in Australia.
I did a quick google search and yep! There is technology like that... radar detectors are illegal in all states of Australia.

First world problems..
To my knowledge, only radar detectors that emit radio signals can be "detected" by authorities. Valentine, for example, give off 0 radio waves, and therefore, is undetectable (according to Valentine). I now have an Escort 9500ix, I do not know whether this model emits any signals. I suppose newer tech may be out there, and that my experiences may be outdated.

Can you post a link to where you see valentine claim they don't "leak"? V1s do leak and can be detected by radar detector detectors. The only radar detectors that are undetectable are those made by escort/beltronics that use the M3 antenna design. These are the escort redline and 9500ci and the beltronics sti driver, sti magnum, and stir plus. The 9500ix uses the M4 antenna design and it does leak and is therefore detectable.

This is awesome, thanks! I want to add a dash cam, but besides deciding which one to order from the 3,000 they sell on Amazon, I really didn't want to pull the headliner loose and A-pillar trim off to run a power wire for it. Of course, now that that isn't an issue, I guess I need to get back to looking at dashcams again. Looking at a few that go over the mirror, nice and stealth but should have a good field of view from that high. But who knows, there are still 2,900 I haven't even looked at, although a lot of them are very similar, if not identical.

Can you post up the info that they DO leak?

It is in the owner's manual of the V1 (up until 2012, anyway):
"1. Valentine One is defined as a radio by the FCC. It
receives only. It’s a passive device that in no way interferes
with the communications or business of others."

Like I said, if there is a new V1 out there, with revised hardware, then my statements are outdated to the new equipment. My 10 year old V1 came with the above statement.

That is not the same as being undetectable. It is a receive only device, however part of what radar detectors do (how they detect) is they create their own internal signal/frequency that mixes with incoming signals (radio waves). The detector then analyzes this mixture and determines if it is a police radar threat or something else (filtering). It's the internal frequency that can be detected by radar detector detectors, unless it is somehow shielded like the M3 antenna design. The V1 does not have this shielding and can be detected. V1s and cobras will say they are rdd immune to the vg-2 and spectre rdds, however these are older rdds and are not really in use anymore. Virginia State police have much newer rdds that will pickup v1s cobras and whistlers but not M3 escort/bels.

From www.radardetectorforum.org:

• M3 Antenna: This is the generally the consensus top-performing antenna from Beltronics and Escort. Originally designed by Beltronics engineers, the M3 is the only platform that is completely stealth to all radar detector detectors including the Spectre Elite. In addition it offers amazing sensitivity to radar both on and off axis

No problem, even though it's detectable you really only need to worry about it if you are in a banned state or if you are a commercial driver as some states ban the use of rds only by truckers. But really even in Virginia where they are banned for all motorists the number of troopers actually running spectres is very low. There are lots of guys on rdf.org that live in VA and run v1s with no issues. If you do get caught the fine is less than a speeding ticket anyway lol.

I have a blackvue camera and I love it. It has a GPS chip so it overlays my speed on top of the video, it really helped when I got a bogus ticket from a pissed off trooper when I was able to show up in court with the video. I snagged mine from blackboxmycar.com. Honestly, I have had a few of the cheaper ones from Amazon and ebay, and the only one I would reccomend is the blackvue. I actually just bought one for my girlfriend, upgrading her from one of the craptastic 50 dollar ones from amazon. The cheaper cameras have a very difficult time at night in my opinion, also the field of view is pretty crappy. If you can afford it, Blackvue is the way to go (in my opinion, obviously).

Blackvue is indeed pretty good. I have an itronics itb- 100 hd and I love it. It takes great video and so far has been pretty durable. I've had it hardwired(same way as in this thread) in my pilot for almost 2 years and I have had to do zero maintenance and every time I pull out the sd card all the video is there. Lukas also makes good dash cams.

I really feel that with dashcams, it's worth it to pay an extra 100 dollars or so to get a quality one. My dashcam paid for itself twice: once after getting the fake ticket mentioned above, and another when my 2012 Focus was totaled. With my video I was able to get 0% liability (but that didn't stop the person from suing me, but I'm sure the video will help out in court!)

We should get a dashcam thread going where we can upload sample videos from our dashcams to compare quality, that would probably help people figure out which one to purchase

Also, are you happy with your itronics? I really like the design of it, and if the quality is good, I may buy it for my sisters cars.

That sounds like a really good idea.

Just used this method to wire in my V1. Worked great, only took me an hour and I was taking my time and hanging out with my buddy. Now I need to get my V1C, stealth assist app(wish YAV1 worked with iOS) and my proclip mount for my phone. Should be an awesome setup!
