Went to go get my windows tinted today, and the place I went to made me feel very uncomfortable. As soon as I walked in they wanted to run my credit card. Their facility was about 50 square feet, and not well maintained. Then they came to see my car, putting their dirty hands all over it. They insisted on removing the spoiler, and mentioned they may not have all he supplies to finish the job. They also said there's a chance they may burn the paint off my car??? I was like what is going on?? Then they forcefully took my keys, and as the shady guy was about to drive away in my car, I made up a story as of why I had to leave. It worked and I hightailed it out of there. What do you guys think, was I overreacting? I've read about a lot of tints on here and I've never heard of having to remove the spoiler. The whole thing seemed off and I felt like I should trust my instincts

Well the way you described it, I would have left as soon as they asked me to pay before doing anything...and as soon as I had any feeling of being uncomfortable. If I feel uncomfortable about something...then it doesn't need done to my 30 thousand dollar car.

Edit: Wtf are they even talking about with this "burn the paint off your car" garbage? No. Absolutely not don't go back.

I would of nope'd out of there as well. From my experience, tint should be done on the inside of the car, so I don't know why they are touching the spoiler or burning any paint.

The place I went to was extremely clean, even with it being the middle of winter and snow slush was everywhere outside. I didn't pay until the car was finished, and when I picked it up he admitted two windows weren't perfect (The top edges of the tint had a slight nick from cutting the film wrong. I probably wouldn't of even noticed it if he didn't point it out) and wanted to reschedule right away. Even gave me a discount on what I was going to pay.

I would definitely look at the reviews of places around you, and not just go to the first place you see. Sometimes it's worth paying a bit more, or waiting for an appointment to get what you really want. After all, you will be the one looking at/through it every day.

You were absolutely not over reacting. That all sounds very shady, and I wouldn't let someone like that touch my car. Read some reviews online and find a good shop, DO NOT GO BACK!

I think you did the right thing. They really shouldn't have to remove anything as all they need access to is the inside of the windows. And to want the money up front for a job they "don't have the supplies to finish", total BS!

More concerning is the "there's a chance they may burn the paint off my car". I don't know how they would do this beyond being careless with a heat gun which would be on them. I would have run so fast out of that place.

No need to remove the spoiler or burn the paint or give up credit info in advance to get this car tinted; find a reputable installer.

I just read it again because I'm seriously trying to imagine such a thing. Where in the **** did you go...lol. Sounds more chop shop than tint service.

Thanks for the replies guys. Glad to know I made the right choice. Needless to say I won't be calling them to reschedule like they insisted I do. The funny thing is, I did read the reviews for this place. They got all 5 star reviews (8 reviews total) and wanted to charge me $350 for a 3M colorstable tint. Here I thought that I'd be getting a good quality tint from a solid company, but boy was I wrong.

Intersting to hear you guys say that tints are done on the inside of the window. They told me that "all tints are done on the outside of the window" the guy also told me several times that he has "over 30 years of experience and clients accrued the country" which tells me he doesn't. Apparently they were going to put the tint on the outside of the window, cut it with a knife, and use a heat gun

IMO that's a little pricey. I got 3M Crystalline all around for $50 more. Maybe that's just the price difference, I don't know, but seems a little pricey to me. The tint goes on the inside when complete, but they will lay it on the outside first to get it cut correctly.

Full car done (other than the windshield) in Crystalline including my moonroof for $350, so that's kinda salty anyway.

They could very well be legitimate, but they way they handled your encounter was extremely unprofessional and sloppy. Wouldn't be getting my business with behavior like that.

Touch my paint with dirty hands once...LOL I already taught my girlfriend how to properly close my door without printing/smudging it all up.

Were they a 3M certified installer? A lot of places install "3M Tint", but that doesn't mean that is what you get. Tint price varies by area, but 3M Colorstable from the certified installer in my area was right at 250 (right at meaning I cannot remember if it was 250 or 260 because it was a few years ago).

Haha no kidding! I hate it when people touch my paint, especially since I spend a lot of time detailing it. Glad I was in the ST when I left so I could get away in a hurry!

So this place is now calling me repeatedly. Never filled out any paperwork or gave them any info, so I'm not sure how they got my cellphone number

Identity theft? Did you actually let them physically possess your credit card for any length of time?
