We've had a sh*t ton of rain the past few days. During a break in the weather, I went out to open the liftgate. As the struts pushed it up, I heard the slosh of water inside the liftgate. How it's getting in there, I'm not sure. As I inspected the lower lip, I saw 3-4 holes that were covered/taped over with clear, oval-shaped pieces of plastic. I peeled one back, and a good half-pint of rainwater poured out.

Now, to find out how the water is getting in.

For real? I think mine still has the stickers on it too.. :-|
Yup. Those holes exist to allow accumulated moisture drain from your liftgate. The stickers should be removed as part of your prepurchase inspection, if I'm not mistaken. I found one,of mine left on when I was taking my hockey bag out, and another user on here had his rust through after only a matter of months.

It's fine that water gets in, it's part of the design. Those stickers should be removed by the dealer, otherwise your liftgate can rust through from the inside.
Hey thanks for the info. I peeled 'em off, but god knows what the rust looks like. I may have a borescope small enough to take a peek, I'll check when I get home. The water came out clear, not orange, so that's encouraging, I guess.

Thanks again.

I tried a small, cheap borescope camera and could not get a good look, the holes are just too small. If you think about it though, any rust would be visible looking right into the hole at the inside panel across from it. If there's rust, you'd see it start around there anyway, as that's where the water collects with the rear hatch in the closed position. Mine was gray, I'm guessing a sealer coat. So I think my car is ok, hopefully yours is too. I don't know if removing the interior panel and latch mechanism would get you a better look inside, but it's worth consideration.

I saw this thread the other day and was thinking "I'll look another time." And saw it again tonight and thought the same thing...but then realized that I'll probably never look unless I go now. So I went out in the rain. 2/3 were still there!
