In my seemingly continual quest to keep adding stuff to my car without spending any money, I thought I'd pinstripe the wheels today! As some of you know I plastidipped them a week or so ago, but for me I just needed a little extra contrast. I think the stripe breaks up all the black going on, and matches the ST logos, but please tell me what you all think! Corny?

That looks awesome! How did you do it? Are you going to paint your calipers as well? Red or any color would stand out nicely against the black. Please give us details!
Not sure if I'm going to paint the calipers yet... I'm not a fan of trying to flash up non-monoblock calipers. If I do it'll probably be in black.

To do the pinstriping I just used vinyl pinstripe tape from O'Reillys, probably also available at Autozone etc. I jacked up each corner of the car and carefully applied it by hand while rotating the wheel. I messed up a lot until I got a good system down. It's hard keeping the spacing even so that it's good enough to not look wobbly when you rotate the wheel, but I did end up getting the hang of it. The good news is a reel of 40 feet is only $3 in a 1/8" width (what I used), so you can afford to mess up.

My strategy was the sit on the ground facing the wheel, and try to put the tape so that the spacing between the tape and the edge of the wheel was the same width as the tape itself. I just kept this same spacing by eye all the way around. Like I said, I got better as I went on.

They do make reflective wheel tape for motorcycles that comes with a little tool, but I didn't want reflective tape, and I wasn't going to buy a $15 roll of reflective tape just for the tool. It's easy enough to do by hand :)

I was also thinking about outlining the grill with a pinstripe... too much?

I like it! REALLY wish I saw this a while back (like, before I bought my winter set). I got the Drag-33 wheels in black, but they also came in black with the red outline (like your look). I thought about it, but decided against and went all black. Crap. lol. Ah well. Nice job!

Question: Is the pinstripe over the plasti dip? How do you think it's going to hold up if it is? I'd worry that one powerwash and the pinstripe would be hanging off. Wonder if a little clear plasti dip overtop would be prudent?

Well the good news is you can always add your own pinstripe like I did :). I don't power wash my car so I don't have that concern, but I can tell you the few times I messed up and pulled the tape it was on fairly good. Also it took a little effort to start peeling up the end, so I don't think it'll come off that easily.

For the other poster who asked: the plastidip is holding up very well, and I wash the wheels with a washcloth. I used 4 cans over 4 wheels. If you search for my past posts I've given some tips I found helpful for the ST wheels.

So is the pinstripe OVER the plasti-dip?

I come from a world where you would literally be laughed off the boards for doing something like that. Im completely against Plasti-dipping anything, but that said, it looks like you did a good job with it. Most people in the VW community who would do something like that would do a terrible job with it. Not bad overall, especially considering the limited wheel options out there in 5x108.

I just went ahead and red pinstriped the perimeter my winter wheel/tire set, as they were already black (Drag-33s). No pic yet, they aren't on my car, but they look good sitting there in my garage! :) Starting to get/stay cold though, so I might pop them back on my car soon. I'll try to remember to take a pic if I do.
