I have about 5800 miles on my ST. I just got a notification today that I need to change the oil. I just changed it at 5K miles. So does the car monitor oil change by miles, hours, or some oil analysis sensor? Since I only drive my ST about 5K miles a year I am just going with a change every 5K. Makes it easy to remember.

I just go by mileage, or lately time. I change every 3K, but since I have only put about 500 miles on the car in the last year and a half I was just changing it every 6 months. I never reset the oil change alert until it pops up

As I understand it, you changed your oil at 5000 miles correct? And currently you have 5800 miles, so it gave you an oil change reminder in just 800 miles right? If that's the case then you forgot to reset the oil monitor. Put the car in accessory mode and then press the gas and brake pedal together until you see an oil reset monitor pop on your screen. Once you do it, it will again remind you after 5000 miles.

I just thought it was weird that it choose 5800 miles for alert. It was actually something like 5762. I'll reset and move on.

It was probably more that it had been 12 months if you said you only put around 5000 miles/year on it.

The formula for IOLM systems is a combination of engine load, temperature, mileage, run hours, and calendar time (if the system knows, I'd expect on ST1's you would not get that from the CAN bus). Basically if you run the car hard and at hot temperatures, the system will assume the oil is wearing quicker.
