Highway Runs?

Was tooling around with a 2019 Avalon on the highway today.

I gunned it at 55mph in 3rd gear and the Avalon briskly walked away from me every time. Something seems wrong here? Should I do 4th to hit peak torque? I'm always concerned about LSPI.

Completely stock Avalon and I think a V6 model.

I'm Freektuned OTS+ with Roush catback and Green Filter, so I thought I'd be a helluva lot quicker? Or at least be able to keep up? I'm hitting 23-24psi without issue so it can't be a boost leak.

They appear to be around the 3600-3700lbs range with 301hp. The ST with all your mods is probably about the same HP at the crank and the ST weighs 3423 (includes a 200lbs driver). So there isn't a massive difference in numbers, then you factor in selecting the right gear and turbo lag, it's entirely possible they'd outrun you.

Hmm makes sense. Wonder if I should've used 4th instead of 3rd. It would put me around 3k rpm instead of 4500k.

Yeah. I probably ran out of breath by using third. It was definitely walking me with ease every time.

If I get to see him again, I'll try 4th.

You wont LSPI in 4th at 55mph on a warmed up car, should be fine (tuners suggests data logging in 3rd and 4ths starting at 2500rpm and 4th gear at 50mph should be around 2800rpm.) You can always try and time yourself if you want to find out for sure. Data log a couple of 3rd gear vs 4th gear pulls. The log will have a time stamp and the mph listed. Start both at like 50 so you can be sure to capture a time at 55mph and then just run it up and pick an an mph as your stopping point.

I'd actually be curious to see what mods can get time wise for like a passing speed test from 55-75 :)

So 5th at 3k would be safe too? For those occasional 70mph pulls? I wouldn't do 6th anyways.

What's the peak torque rpm range anyways? 2,800-4,000?

Yeah. I rather stick with stage 1 for warranty. It's fun as it is and I rarely ever beat on it. I average 26-27 mpg lol.

I'm seeing dyno sheets on here of STs making more power than that on stage 1. Justin said I should be around the 310-320 wtq range but hp is very minor in gains.

I have a catback and intake, that's it. Waiting for Velossa to make/ship my big mouth kit. It'll not make much power but why not?!

Respectable decision, and it's not for everyone anyway. Lots of people can appreciate this car in it's true stock form, and in true stock form + nice wheels and tires it dominates Autocross G-Street (or at least it did...I've been out of the loop a year now) as an example of it's performance. Yeah, in stock form the only "power" you can really squeeze out is from torque, and that comes from running higher boost more than anything else. Peaking at 22-24 vs peaking at 19-21psi will put you around 300-320 pretty handily with some tweaks. Depends on the car...I'd expect in the middle of that range more than I would 320, but its enough to have a bit more fun for sure.

Even running "stage 1" tune though I'd say you're still at a risk of not being covered under warranty if you blow up your engine...just throwing that out there in case someone else misled you. If your motor pops and they find evidence you flashed your ECU it doesn't matter that you only have an intake, they won't cover it short of being bribed or "knowing a guy" lol.

Velossatech Big Mouths look badass, so I approve! What color you get to go with that pepper?

If you bought this as a roll racer you better get a Big turdbro quick like...

My mom owns a Avalon V6, and once it shifts it is gone, it is like the slowest slush box auto I have ever driven but once it hits it is a pretty quick 4 door boat.

have the same person/car follow you up a tight back road, but wish them good luck first ;) this car is meant for curves not straights.

So I just got slightly neck to neck with a freaking stock Fiesta ST at a 35 mph roll. He started to pull on me. I was in third at 2,600 ish. Maybe I should've done 2nd gear? Going to reflash now because it's as if my tune is no different speed wise from stock. It "feels faster" but I keep losing damn it.

Just trying to figure out where I'm going wrong. Perhaps I should aim to keep my rpm between 3-3500 for fastest spool/pick up at any speed?

OAR has to relearn too if you reset the KAM.. do steady low boost pulls up an incline grade on a hwy and it will start to go back to -1

#23 ·
Yeah. I did this when I first tuned. Got up to -1 in no time flat.

And not planning on an intercooler. I only do short bursts every now and then. I don't push it enough to worry about heat soak really. Maybe one WOT run before work and one after.

Yeah... instead of putting the tach on 2500-3k rpm, I find that putting it at 3500-4000 makes the most "instant" power for a quick take off. 2nd gear still amazes me and 3rd pulls hard now. 4th seems to be better at 55mph than 3rd for this reason. The turbo spools much more quicker in this rpm range, whereas I was waiting on it to build up in the past (every second counts). Long story short, it's not about the peak torque.. but rather the peak power and turbo spooling time. I kept thinking that putting the car into the peak torque range was the faster method, but not on this car. I've been driving a WRX (high RPM power) and Jeep Wrangler (low RPM power) -- and the FoST likes to be shifted in the middle ground between the two, so I'm retraining myself. Let's see what happens the next time someone challenges me hah.

Probably will do a battery pull when I install my Big Mouth snorkel and AEM Dryflow filter, just to see what happens.

Yes, it's that public roads are not race tracks. I drive my kid to daycare on these same roads. So do lots of other people. Stop endangering everyone. Go find an autocross club or local drag strip or actual racetrack and do something worth bragging about. For what you'd spend on a radar detector and/or a speeding ticket, you could do an entire season or more of autocross.

I know that. I've done some SCCA myself in my older cars.

Fiesta was from a 20-55 pull on a 55mph road. Lake Ontario parkway is pretty much empty.

Avalon was a 55-75 pull on interstate. I don't like to speed. Just get up to speed quickly.

I don't think that Fiesta ST was stock; their forum is always saying they will never pull a FoST even with full bolt-ons.

No one has mentioned the torque multiplications of the lower gear; it is relevant. I think you'll pull harder at 4500 in 3rd than 3000 in 4th.

Do a search, we have threads on this.

Try again when the conditions are all right with the weather, car, no traffic, etc.... mimic the same conditions, minus the Avalon, and drop one less gear. Just play around with it and find where your car shines. I'm modded different as are most of us on here, lots of similarities but different drivers, locations, conditions, etc... I'm surrounded by country so it's a little easier just be safe. I'm paranoid about LSPI but with the Accessport you can keep an eye on timing and if you are treating the ST right or not. With a ton of daily driving I even forget what gears are best for 'hooning' around when the time comes and sometimes I get caught and choose the wrong gear, throttle, whatever and that's when you stop, admit defeat lol and try again whenever the next time comes around. These cars are a ton of fun but they will not beat everything, not made for that, but it made for a good thread.

stock focus st will beat a stock fiesta st hands down, no questions asked. a modded st is a different ball game especially with a tune that gets rid of the stock ecu strategies, apples to oranges comparing to stock to modded/tuned.

the new 8-10 speed automatics being used in most cars now are killing manuals in any timed runs all else being equal.
