So here is the noise. To me it sounds like metal on metal popping or clicking. At first I thought it was the cv axle but after changing out 3 I was like no way I got 3 bad axles. So I put the original back in and drove like that for a while.
The only other thing at that point I could think of was the wheel bearing, which is odd because I've never heard a wheel bearing make this sound.
I've only heard axle nuts that lost torque/were too loose make this noise. But obviously between the 3 aftermarket axles and reinstalling the OEM axle, you'd have had the proper torque on the nut at least one time.

Yes its a two step process. First the 80nm then an additional 90 degrees which would be a quarter turn. I don't know when this type of torque procedure started to be used. I drove old junk for the last 30 years and never heard of it until this car.
For what it's worth, on some of the bolts that need an additional turn to some degrees past a specific torque value, you can just put a mark on the top of the bolt (make the mark line up with a point near the bolt that won't move, or simply make a mark if you want) and then use a protractor to measure the degrees you twisted the bolt after cranking it down more. I've done this a few times on bolts that are a pain to deal with, such as the lower control arm through bolt, and just using an impact to get it where it needs to be.
Also, if you can totally get this nut to 90 degrees. You need a lot of leverage. Be careful about your wheel studs. If you use them to hold the hub make sure you are at the base of the stud, otherwise you will bend your studs and the only way to replace them without cutting is to replace the wheel bearing.
You can also use a torque multiplier like this to make it really easy to get that 90 degrees.
I just tighten it until 90 or my vertebrae launch from my spinal column, whichever comes first.
I forgot about torque multipliers. Maybe I should grab one someday.
