Engine Fault 3rd to 4th??

So redlining in 3rd gear, I went to shift to 4th, let the clutch out a little too fast and hit the syncros hard. Hit the gas, and the engine revved way over the rev limiter and an instant engine fault popped up. Airbag light went off, and traction got turned off. Engine went into limp mode, and as soon as I turned it off and turned it back on, everything was alright. This happened twice so far and I've definitely learned my lesson.

I'm just confused as to how the revs could've went up so high when I wasn't actually in gear? I'm 99% sure I didn't hit 2nd by mistake and both times the shifter was just in neutral. Hopefully I didn't cause any damage.

There's no rev limiter on these cars. You could rev all the way to the moon if you wanted to. I don't even bother revving that high because the turbo dies after 5500 RPM anyway. You're just wasting time above that RPM.
So could what I did cause damage to my engine?
I wouldn't worry too much about it. Accidents happen. It went into limp mode to protect the engine. I'd just be careful next time.
Huh? Theres an electronic rev limiter. Which tuners will happily adjust to suit anyones needs.

There is no mechanical over-rev protection, which is standard for a manual trans.

iirc my limiter is at 7200 right now, not that thats anywhere for the ST to be on the stock k03.
I mean there's nothing preventing you from revving (in neutral) all the way to redline. Of course every car has a rev limit at the redline to prevent damage to the motor.
