Do we have a factory tint?

This may sound like a silly question, but here's a bit of context. I noticed a very small blotch of missing film on the interior of my driver side window:

This got me looking closer and I noticed a clear tint terminating at the edge of the glass:

So I suppose I'm asking: is this factory? Or did the previous owner do this? I always thought Ford's solar tint was built into the glass itself. Is the solar tint applied like any other tint then?

Thats aftermarket. I still have zero tint as from factory.

Thanks, Deuce!

Now I suppose I have to hope that this small hole doesn't strip further any time soon...

Yeah that appears to be legal tint (50% or above). Complete waste of money if you ask me, it makes little to no difference.

Usually factory tints are somehow embedded into the glass, not a film.

Some states any tint is illegal. Like NY. The glass has to meter 70% light transmission or you can’t even pass state safety inspection. Which means ANY film on the glass will fail.

theres no film on the windows from the factory, but the light transmission of the windows in factory form is like 90%. Keep that in mind if any of you install film.
factory tint is not a film, it will be actually tinted glass. The fact you can see a film line on the top edge and a chip in yours is a tell tail sign its aftermarket (or even dealer installed but still not oem.)

My bmw comes with factory tinted glass, has this etched in, Transp. Min 70%:

the glass was the same color throughout, only have a film line on mine after i had them tinted darker ;)

Next time you are in a parking lot, go park next to another focus, you should be able to see the difference between your tinted windows and factory glass

Thanks for the fabulous info, everyone. As you already know, I know absolutely nothing about tint. So little, that it took me over a year of owning this car to realize I even had it!

Funny thing - this car lived in VA when I bought it. I understand they're notoriously anal about tints (and just about everything else). I'm surprised the previous owner got away with this, though I don't suspect this is terribly aggressive as far as tints go.

Related question: If I live in a state with lenient tint limits but get pulled over while driving through a strict state, can I be ticketed if the tint is legal in my state not in the state through which I'm driving?

@TurboGT , I agree - I would never spend money to tint, but I suppose the car does look pretty slick with them, so I guess I should keep it until it really starts peeling off .

@Melchior i tint everything i own, personal preference. My comment was that if you're spending the money to do it, do it to a degree where it makes a difference. Legal tint makes practically zero difference in look and interior temperature.

Agreed, the first car I tinted I went legal and could barely tell a difference except certain light situations. Current tint on my ST is 15% all around. My eyes are really sensitive to light so the dark tint makes a dramatic difference to me, especially at night with other car's headlights. I suppose I could get a medical tint waiver but haven't went through the process yet.

I dont think tint alone is going to get you pulled over. That being said, if a cop was really motivated, they could still probably give you a ticket. An out of state ticket is more likely to be paid via mail vs someone coming to fight it ;). Both my bmw and ST are darker on the front windows than whats allowed in my state. The focus even has a double wide strip on the front windshield and never has gotten me in trouble (its more noticeable to me than the front windows.) We've driven across several states and i've never been worried about tints.

Thanks again for the great info!
That's not a stupid question at all! From your description, it sounds like you have factory tinting. Many cars come with light tinting from the factory to help reduce glare and UV exposure. Transparent edging around the edge of the glass is a common feature of factory tinting. To me, this is a nice feature that provides privacy and protection. I also added sunblinds, which I ordered at https://snapshades.com/, to give my car an elegant look and hide what is happening inside the cabin from intruders. Anyway, enjoy the ride, and good luck to you.

Right My SE I had to strip all the tint to pass inspection. Went and had ceramic tint put on my ST and they could only do like 15% which is basically nothing.. But I figured the ceramic tint should still cut down on the heat. I figure I got screwed because it's still hot AF in there. I'm in New York as well.
