Check engine light, code says misfire... can't get in for service

2015 ST1 with 4800 miles on it.

This past Monday night, I filled up my gas tank with a fresh tank of 93 from BP. On Tuesday morning, I walked out to my car, started it and was instantly greeted with a CEL. Odd. Car drove fine. I drove to work (8 miles) and as I was walking away from the car, I noticed that the fuel door wasn't fully pressed in. OOPS! There's my problem right there. I clicked it shut and figured the code would disappear.

Well, it's now Wednesday and about 80 miles later and the CEL is still on. Just now, I drove to Autozone to have it read.

P0300 - misfire detected, random cylinders
p0302 - misfire detected, cylinder number 2

That's not cool.

As far as I can tell, the car drives fine. I say "as far as I can tell" because the temperature has been in the 90s and I've been driving it in traffic, with the AC cranked so it's not like I've had any opportunity to really open it up. Just around town, it feels fine.

PROBLEM:

Both of my local Ford dealers (I drove to one and then called another) are telling me the soonest they can look at my car is NEXT Thursday August 6th. That's really not good. I'm incredibly frustrated because I don't want to keep driving this thing if I'm causing damage.

Any recommendations/experience from you fine educated Focus ST folks?

EDIT:

So, 21 months later (548 days total with 58 days spent at the dealership), my car never got fixed (despite multiple tries) and Ford ended up buying back the vehicle and replacing it with a brand new one, free of charge. The entire process was nothing less than a nightmare of car ownership that I would not wish on anybody.

Here's a link to that update:

An update on my car, I completed a lemon buy back in July after visiting service a total of 7 times in less than 1 year/15k miles. Symptoms were getting worse and continued after a head replacement.
Sorry to hear that. :( Are you replacing it with another ST?

I got my car back today. Replaced a spark plug and coil assembly, didn't specify which one. This would be the second coil replaced in less than a year.

Update on my 4th CEL, 2015 with 32500 miles. Ford gave it back to me with the CEL on still and asked me to just call in periodically to see if there's a fix. They think it'll just be a firmware update. Sunday the CEL went off since there wasn't anything causing the code after a few engine cycles, so guess that's a plus.

Update-

I brought my car in on Monday so they could needlessly replace the cylinder head. I called them today to see if it was nearly done.

Nope.

I got some bull**** story about how Ford wanted them to do more testing on my car (get the **** out of here) and attempt a fix (which they refused to tell me what that attempt was) that did not end up fixing my car. I won't be getting the car back until Wednesday at the latest now due to this dealer screwing with my car instead of just installing the new head.

Ridiculous. More screwing around, more time without my car and more money wasted on a repair that the car doesn't need.

Also, I received my buy-back paperwork Fed-Ex'd from Ford today. Based on all my dealings with Ford up until this point, I am not confident that this buy-back will go as it should. Time will tell.

Update

Went to my dealership to do two things today.

1- check on the status of my car's cylinder head replacement (was told it should be done today)

2- speak to someone regarding my buyback per the directions on the buyback paperwork

what happened?

The dealer ended up calling the police on me and I have a video of their service manage losing his mind screaming at me for checking on my car so often.

Shal I post the video?

What the actual F? Please post the video if you feel comfortable doing so. I am not sure if @FordService can help or buy reporting this guy. He sounds like a royal jackass. I also would like to know how the heck you are supposed to get your car back.

Well, this service manager (and another service writer there) both told me that they were going to put my car back together and give it to me right there and then because I was so desperate to drive my car.

In fact, I have him on video saying they're just going to put my car back together and give it to me so I can get out of there.

Obviously this is terrifying... putting together an unfinished engine bay. And the prospect of these guys doing something to my car now that they're upset with me is also a very real thing that I'm scared of.

Once the police were there, they got Fair Oaks Ford to agree to the following:

1- They're going to finish the cylinder head repair. The timing chain tensioner will be there later today/tomorrow and the car should be finished by Friday.

2- They're going to deliver the finished car to my house at which point, they will take back the loaner.

Now, if you're anything like me- the prospect of one of these guys driving my car is also quite frankly- not appealing at all. God knows what these maniacs are going to do.

That is insane. Now if/when something else goes wrong with the car you will have to go to a different dealer? I would try to complete to buy back. You have spent far too much time and patience on that car.

#782 ·
The buyback is why I went to the dealer in the first place today. In the paperwork from Ford, it says to contact the dealer about the buy back.

God only knows whats going to happen with that whole procedure now.

I got screamed at and told multiple times that they're not going to fix my car.

"Nope! I don't' care if it's fixed or not! I'll call Trofiligio (?), I'll call Ford!"

and

"Put the car together! I am not working on it! I'll Call Nick Mason (?), everyone at Ford Motor Company!!"

And now after all that, I'm supposed to believe that they're going to change their attitude, complete the repair properly and deliver me my car in full working order?

I don't feel good about it at all.

I made an account just to respond to this, my 15 FoST has also been having the misfire code issue and I am, for the time being, content with waiting for the solution whatever that might be.

In regards to the service manager losing his **** on you I think this puts you in a unique situation especially given you have some of it on video. Im not going to lie, I would be so totally irate and pissed off if this happened to me after dealing for months at getting my brand new car fixed. Especially considering throughout the whole experience you often spoke highly of the dealer in question despite no solution being found. If it were me, I would attempt to start a gigantic **** tornado, armed with the video along with your service statements showing how often you brought the car in I would contact Jalopnik, local news stations and any other pertinent news organizations. At the very least I would report your experience to Ford. Having the cops called on you because your inquiring about the status of a vehicle you own and are having continued issues with is not acceptable. Not to mention the fact that he threatened to put the car back together in an un-finished state which I am sure violates industry regulations of some kind.

Sorry for the rambling but I am angry on your behalf haha

Thanks for registering and joining this party :)

I've been working a lot with Ford regional customer service (who has been very good) and I notified them about the disaster that took place this afternoon.

I'm desperately hoping they can resolve this because man... this is awful. I'm legitimately sick about what is going to happen with my car now that the dealership is acting this way.

#784 ·
Wow, what a **** dealer... that's f ing ridiculous!

I would like to point out to everyone who is pissed off at this dealer for who he treated AK (including me) that ford does not own the dealerships, and this is not the way ford wants to do business(I assume) time to have a tow truck bring your vehicle to another dealer for the repair

They did replace the cylinder head.

They never told me why they were doing it or how it could solve the problem.

Why did they do it even though they are buying back the car? In Ford's words- they are committed to fixing my car even though I am having it bought back.

So I am also receiving this P0300 misfire code along with P0245, P0034 and P0446. They had found a wire sliced open on the rear wire-harness where the seat folds with some steel showing and are trying to say one of my tools fell behind it and cause that entire issue. So not covered under warranty. Speaking with Shop foreman as to why he thinks thats even possible. First tried to blame it on my 90LB floor jack saying it bounced and caused damage but that is some pretty sturdy foam around the spare. i know P0245, P0034 pertain to the turbo, but could it actually be that the parts are bad or that its just a short in the system due to one exposed wire they don't wanna fix till i pay up? I will post pictures once i can email them to myself.

Since the weather has been cool and raining today, I haven't had my check engine light on for the past week. It always turns off when I wash my car and usually in the morning or later that night it will come back on. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the weather still or not

Hi All,

for months I have been having this problem. Random misfire errors and engine light on, almost every week. 3 weeks ago, I went to the shop for 15k miles regular maintenance and they performed the SSM 45788 Crankshaft Position Sensor Relearn. My understanding is that this is essentially a software update/reprogram. For now, it looks that the problem went away and did not appear again.

I will keep you all updated, but let's hope this is the fix.

Good luck!

For probably a year now I've periodically checked this thread, hoping and praying Ford cared enough to figure this out, or employed anyone smart enough to figure this out, to no avail. Sad. Really sad. Whenever I get the opportunity to drive my car like it was meant to be, the smile is quickly erased off my face when I remember I need to get rid of it as soon as the warranty expires. I got rid of my GTI for this car because I didn't want to worry about reliability, but I'd take that thing back in a heartbeat. Between this thread and the "blown motor resources" thread, I think these cars might even be worse than Subarus. And that's saying a LOT.

I bought my ST earlier this year, I only have about 4,400 miles on the car and I am now getting the dreaded P0300, P0316. The car has already been in for repairs earlier due to a rusted shut a/c compressor clutch... I now regret my purchase and trading in my Subaru. I don't want to even bother taking the car in because they will obviously not fix the problem because they don't know how. At least Ford has admitted there is a problem and are currently working on it. I will be patient for about a month but after that if there is no resolve I will start the process of bringing in the car 3 times for repair and exercise my lemon law rights. It sucks because I was just feeling at home in my car...

Well, certainly was hoping to never have to make this post. This awesome car that does everything (fun, functional, fuel efficient, etc) has turned into something I dread starting up.

~15k miles on the 2016 st3 and I'm getting the 316, 300, and 302 codes; misfire on startup, random misfire, and misfire on cylinder 2 respectively. Brought into dealer, cleared them with a "well clearly it's because you're using the green filter there!" I made my point that it shouldn't matter but brought the OEM to put on because I want ZERO doubt when troubleshooting this. Go figure, little while later codes come back and I drop it off. I call after four days (was traveling so figured more time with them the better, foolishly) and "well we can't replicate the results sir, the Ford engineers don't seem to know what it is either." The same story we've heard over and over, this sucks. Big time. Couple that with the seat issues I've had, and it's starting to get really depressing, definitely second guessing the choice of this over the GTI. It's a shame, this car is more fun, more ridiculous, and after the mkiv jetta, I was thinking it'd be more reliable...

Anyways! I'm an engineer so it's time to do what nerds do and COLLECT ALL TEH DATAZ! Picked up an OBDLink mx and the forscan software. Pretty impressed with the software, grabbed the PC version after having good luck with the android version. Haven't been in town enough to really dig into this but I thought I'd share some prelim data. Also: if you have a 2016 without this issue or and older model and feel like grabbing some data for comparison that'd be just swell. Interesting thing, before I started getting the MIL and dealing with the dealer, I saw the P316 code in the PCM early on with a ELM based obd reader (knockoffs are k but not as good imho), must need some kind of persistence before throwing a light. Put the order in for the nicer one right then and there after reading the 81 pages that have accumulated here so far, definitely paid off when the MIL came on and went to the dealer the first time. Looks like I can't attach a comma delimited file so threw it on my dropbox for anyone interested. Off the cuff didn't see anything that stuck out but I was interested in the spark advance, pic of that is attached. Will start looking into this more as the days go on and hopefully post more findings!

Also for what it's worth, changed the oil the first time to Castrol Syntec synthetic, and used oem filter. Had an analysis done at blackstone for the OEM stuff, will be changing the oil and going with Penzoil Ultra Platinum when I get back home and sending a sample of the used Castrol in. Maybe low viscosity causing issues on startup? Feels like a stretch, but honestly questioning everything so far.
