I spoke to a Cobb specialist about catless downpipe and was advised by him that it is a bad idea and that it would throw codes and make the car run improperly even if I put the stage 3 Cobb tune on the vehicle that includes the downpipe upgrade. Long story short I didn't find any threads specifically where anyone spoke from experience of installing a catless downpipe. I would really like some advice on the topic as I'd rather not install a catted dp it's more expensive and quite honestly emissions inspections aren't a concern to me just that the light will not come on and the car will run great. Hope anyone can help and thank you in advance !

I asked a downpipe question yesterday as I'm thinking of going that route. From what I gathered, on a catless downpipe you'll want to get a defouler to connect to the O2 sensor. You also would want to contact your tuner, so they can modify it, so you don't throw codes. Not sure if you're using COBB for your tuning needs, but there are many other great tuners out there who can help. I'm running a Stratified flash tune on mine now. When I go with a different downpipe, I'll get a tune revision.

Hey man so from my personal experience you will be okay with a catless downpipe and using the cobb ots tune as I did this for about a bit until I got my tune through freektune. I did NOT throw any code for the o2 sensor while on the cobb ots map either. May have ran a tad bit rich but other than that the car ran like a champ. And for the install, the catless dp was WAYYY easier to install than taking the stocker out lol it was pretty huge.

This^ You will be fine with a catless DP and run a defouler to save the life of your o2 sensor. I would recommend getting a tune through a reputable tuner as well. Stratified, Freaktune, etc. They can make sure your car won;t throw codes.

If you go with a CPE catless downpipe it actually comes with a smart O2 simulator to prevent tripping the light and an extra 02 bung for hooking up a wideband to it.

Did you use that with the simulator ? Seems to work well no issues ?

Yeah I know cats are so pointless just needless restriction I've seen some YouTube guys use the catless and have no issues but I'm very particular and I'm a mechanic so I know if something isn't acting the way it should compared to the average Joe. Not to toot my own horn at all it just comes with the job loll

I am actually going catless this weekend. Just going to use the vibrant defouler with the medium insert, if you dig around the forums for old threads, that is the route most have taken. Defouler can be had for ~$30 shipped on amazon. I will then get a tune update from stratified to make everything that much better.

Edited Post and Title because no downpipe should be "careless" :)

Check me on this, but the defouler thing is not necessarily for the codes. A tune will get rid of any codes that will trigger a CEL. What a tune can't get rid of however is a "not ready" signal for that sensor (this condition does not trigger a CEL). The not ready signal is what some guys have had issues with when going for inspection. Otherwise, I don't think a not ready is any big deal if you don't need have to deal with emissions or inspection.

And stay away from simulators. Fix your CEL with a tune. That's not a Focus issue, that's true on any O2 car. Simulators are band aids.

I don't have to worry about the emissions side of things in my state one monitor can be out for the test to run. And I've also heard guys putting the stage 2 or 3 tune whichever has the dp and with the tune they never had any issues

Yeah so I just installed the Depo catless DP on my 2013. I loaded the stage 3 cobb OTS tune before starting it up and no CEL's.

I've heard that most tuning companies will take the codes off but.... I've also seen where tuners are getting flak by the EPA, so they aren't so keen on doing it anymore. I would check with whatever tuning company you feel like going with first before buying any tune.

Or get a defouler

Update I bought a rev9 careless downpipe for 168 dollars shipped it was on eBay but it was a product I've seen good reviews for and selling for 300 dollars elsewhere so I got it for a very good deal got it in the mail the build quality is very good for what it is which is basically a pipe with a flex section lol. I'll see if I get away with just the stage 3 ots tune and no cel.

You got lucky. I bought mine (same deal) and I actually had to cut the hangers completely off bc they did not line up even remotely close. The pipe is great, no leaks, etc. however I had to have an exhaust shop weld some on so my DP/Exhaust isn't banging underneath my car. Hindsight I wish I would've just bought a more recognized name. Glad to hear yours worked out.

If the King of Prussia on your profile means that you're from PA you're gonna want to watch out with Emissions.
You should look into getting that defouler as that downstream O2 sensor is going to throw the code it's just that the AP is hiding it with the Stage 3 tune.
You'll still fail emissions even though you don't see a CEL. If you live in a county that has a sniffer and isn't only utilizing the OBDII port for your inspection then you're screwed no matter what.
You'll get good at swapping to the stock downpipe once a year.

I used a defouler for the o2 sensor. No CEL and ran fine on factory tune for several months before getting the accessport. I live in CA so in a couple years I'll be stuck having to swap it out every other year. Just hold on to your stock DP
