Hey all,
I just had my GTX 2867r .64 ar installed and street tuned with a local guy here. The turbo is spooling pretty slow, won't hit full boost till over 4k and I am maxed at about 22-23 psi. By maxed, I mean the Wastegate is at 100% duty and we simply couldn't get it to produce anymore boost. There are no exhaust leaks and the installer said that they had double checked the routing of the vacuum lines on the boost solenoid, after expressing concerns they may not have done them right. (lol) Is there anything else this could be? I'm starting to think at this point it has to be incorrect routing on the solenoid. No signs of bad turbo, it was used but no shaft play, smoke, or anything else. My BOV source is the MAPTAP that comes with the CP-E kit. Any help is greatly appreciated.
If it matters, my mods are:
GTX 2867r .64 A/R
Altitude Autowerks FMIC
CP-E exhale Tial BOV
CoolingMist stage 2 WMI injection 50/50 CM10 nozzle
3" catless DP
Denso ITV22

I think your suspicions may be correct. See if you can get in there too check those lines out. Also, maybe your solenoid could be damaged, and need to be replaced.

Imma get under there and check in a few minutes. Anyway to test and see if the solenoid is damaged? Could it potentially be a boost leak as well?

There could be a massive boost leak too, sure. Check all of the piping to make sure there are no spots with the hose may not be on securely.

As far as checking the solenoid, I'm not sure. Luckily in my case, the turbo came with a solenoid so I just swapped my stock one on, and was good.

My .86 setup sees full spool before that so something is off with your setup, I would suspect the tune is off (meaning the way they setup the file) another tuner would have to chime in for that. My waste gate isn't maxxed out and I run 23psi w/ wmi, so I would suspect the tune first and since it's a fresh install a boost leak.

I had the same issue with my GTX2867r. Slow spool and low boost at 100% WGDC. We had checked everything and nothing was wrong so we removed the turbo for inspection. To our surprise, the wastegate was not closing properly. I could spin the wastegate door with my finger. We had tested the wastegate before installation to make sure it was opening at 15psi and it was fine then. My guess is the spring wasn't seated correctly and after some use it clicked into place resulting in a improper spring pressure. We readjusted the wastegate to 15psi spring pressure and it's been working fine ever since!

Upon initial inspection, it seems like the issue is the vacuum lines. The installer didn't install the boost tap into the hot side charge pipe for boost reference, instead, they Tee'd off the vacuum line that goes to the map sensor. So effectively, there is the the line that goes to the wastegate, line that goes to the non-pressurized turbo inlet side, and a line that goes to the MAP sensor instead of to another tap on the hotside pipe. I'm hoping this will be the issue and I won't have to pull off the whole turbo... I ordered a new boost tap from ATP so hopefully I can get this resolved quickly.

Would you please provide pictures? This could help me on my turbo set up. . Thank you
(still trying to find decent pictures on an EFR turbo.
Unfortunately I have a GTX so probably won't help much with the EFR.
UPDATE: I put in the tap on the hot side, re did all the lines and they are 100% correct and..... same problem. Next stop is the wastegate like previously mentioned after a boost leak test

Does your tuner have big turbo tuning experience? It may be worth moving to someone who has. I know Freektune does SCT big turbo tuning.

Yes, I sent some datalogs to Alex at Stratified and he verified that it isn't the tune, it's something mechanical or in the plumbing. I gave up and dropped it off yesterday at one of the performance shops in town so they can figure it out.

Update***
Tial MVS 38mm EWG arrived in the mail today, tomorrow it is going back to the shop to have the EWG installed, internal welded shut, and have a dump tube fabbed to fit my car. As soon as that is finished, I will report back to see if this in fact fixed the issue. This has been a massive headache, it has to be the wastegate at this point.

It's crazy that it's come to this. I hope this is it! At least you will sound mean when your wastegate opens lol.

Was it the wastegate? I am having a similar problem and am now regretting using the Cobb IWG bracket and not welding the internal wastegate closed. I have the Tial 38mm and dump tube. Based on other threads it seems I do have to check the exhaust side for leaks including the downpipe. Have the same slow spool with my .64 and Alex told he it was hardware as well.

Any outcome would be greatly appreciated before I have to pull my turbo off.....ugh!

Hey I was having the same problem with my 2867r

It was the IWG

After putting on the Tial MVS external waste gate the car instantly felt better and went back to making the correct boost and spooling correctly.

It sounds awesome too! I hope this fixes your issue as well.

Mine is spooling much slower - is Gen1 GTX - at 3000 in 3rd gear I am only at 11-12 psi. The climb in somewhat linear from there up to 19 psi at 4000 and 25 psi at 5000 which is about my max boost. Still have to pull it apart to make sure. Can't wait! Not! No matter what pain there is , I love this car! So much fun to drive.
