Is it possible to update a 2014 ST3 Sync 2 system to the Sync 3 system?
I saw online that one can purchase the OEM system for $2k.
I really want android auto and don't care about spending $2k to upgrade, nor do I mind spending the time to swap everything out.
What is involved in the update, what do I need to consider?
Also where can I find more information on the system?

It's cheaper to trade in for the newer ST.

If you mean reprogramming it then no. The two systems use different hardware, specifically the APIM and the FDIM. Maybe some other modules too but I know for sure the two I listed are different.

Reread my post. I said you cant reprogram your My Ford Touch (SYNC 2) to make it a SYNC 3 because, again, they use different hardware. The link you provided is $2000 because they are providing you with new hardware. Specifically a new SYNC 3 APIM and a compatible FDIM (touchsceen).

You could save yourself around $1500 with a quick eBay search. I found compatible units ranging from $350 to $800 shipped. Now you've got me thinking about doing the upgrade...

Even if you source all the parts, you still need some coding done, which only a couple of folks seem to be able to do (for a price of course) Which I think even involves you shipping that new equipment you bought to them to have performed.

That said, I would do it for myself, if the money were just laying around.

Sync 3 is leaps and bounds over Sync 2, I'd love to get it in my 2015. The thing I would be worried about is all the stuff that's tied into the system (sterling wheel buttons, voice commands, USB ports) would work with the newer one or not. I'll be following this thread to see what comes of it because it's definitely an upgrade I would do. Just not at that high price point.

If it's just android auto you want you can upgrade yourself to sync version 2.2 and get android auto.

My bad. I double checked and I have sync 3 already. Just upgraded to a version where android auto and apple play work. I don't see a way for it to work on sync2.
