I was looking for a used hot hatch and since I owned a GTI (25+ years ago) that was the first vehicle I sought out. I drove a 2018 Autobahn which had the LSD, extra power, leather and all the goodies. It has a great interior and everything works well. When you get on it the thing goes....plenty of power with a slight delay from the turbo. It was an extremely composed ride although for some reason I didn't like the pedal layout. It was uncomfortable for me.... maybe with some seat adjustment I could have made it work.

I hate Ford.... came to this game with a clear bias against the brand. I'm buying a 2018 Focus ST in the ST1 package. I found one that is nearly new (4100 miles), and looks like a new car. It was hit in the rear so it has the rebuilt title and the price dropped accordingly. I'm having it inspected and put on an alignment rack and if it passes I'll make the deal.

So why? Once I drove this car I just smiled the entire ride. It is just much more fun to drive than the GTI which was too much like a normal car. The base seats are comfortable, the clutch/pedals and seating arrangement for me was much more comfortable in traffic. The Focus rides rougher, feels less civilized, but wow.... just loved driving the thing. For me buying something like this comes down to personal enjoyment behind the wheel and the Focus had me grinning even though it is a piece of crap Ford.

Quite the story! As someone who grew up in a Ford family I've always hated Dodge...but there's always one car from the brand you hate that you can tolerate and for me it's the Challenger. That thing has classic 80's styling and I love it...plus the sound nearly rivals the distinct Mustang sound. I'd certainly buy a Hellcat if I were in the market, but all other Dodge's can burn.

Sounds like we are similar but opposite

Hope it plays out for you! You'll be so satisfied especially if you plan to do some mods...it really wakes up so much that I think stock ST's are boring and lifeless to drive now that I've adjusted to tuned and modded.

Ha... I'm not a Nazi about it but I definitely have a bias against the brand.

Honestly even though it cannot be measured by any "reviewer", I think the smiles per miles ratio on the FOST is the determining factor in the hot hatch market. End of day Focus ST wins hands down. Like said earlier if only we had an AWD it would be perfect. If only the RS was a big turbo 2.0 engine and not $20k more.

It is the same reason I love my Harley. I was for sure going to be a honda/yamaha guy going strictly for a good value. Then I rode a Harley.

It is one of those things you just cannot explain. Some reason Ford Performance understands "fun to drive" better than the competition <- my opinion.

Oh no, the silver muffler I described is only on base model Focus!

STs you can't see the muffler at all underneath just the exhaust tips...which for me are black from soot

Up front disclaimer- I only skimmed this thread, so repeat info & stupid rant possible. Also- I was a mechanic at VW for 3 years in Nashville.

Comparing the ST and GTI makes no sense to me from the start. They're totally differing vehicles, from performance to accessories to interior feel. I used to somewhat dig GTI's, then I started working at VW and they eventually became super boring to me. They felt slow, they look meh to me now, I was just over them. I will say, I have not driven the 2018 models, as my last year at VW was 2016. But after having my ST for a year now, and remembering my experiences with the GTI, the ST is 20x more fun to drive, and doesn't get boring to me. I never owned a GTI, but I did drive them every single day, multiple a day, sometimes 150+ miles for CEL/Inspection reasons. My only complaint is the sound system in the ST1, I understand it's the "base" model, but it's god awful, but on the bright side my ST1 did come with a sunroof!

The GTI is a little lighter, there I gave it props on something. Everyone has their cup of tea, not trying to bash the GTI. Some people like the Das Auto thing, others Slowpar, while some people for some ungodly reason like something like a Civic Type-R. To each their own, except those who like Civic Type-R, you're not welcomed.

I bought it last night. I cannot believe I'm driving an ORANGE Ford. It isn't Pinto orange at least... really wanted a grey one but evidently grey Focus ST owners are better drivers than the ones driving orange Focus STs.

Believe it or not my older brother had one of these. Jeesh... if he had held onto that piece of junk it would have been a classic. The entire thing would shudder and shake uncontrollably at 85 mph. It required a good tailwind going downhill to reach that precarious point.
