    Exclamation Creaking shifter bezel... anyone?

Am I the only one who's shifter bezel makes a ton of noise?

    This piece...

    Specifically...

Mine creaks like crazy. Accelerating from a stop? It creaks. Passenger rests their knee against the center tunnel, it creaks. God forbid you touch it because it creaks.

I've taken the entire center stack apart and it is 100% this part that is the culprit. The weird thing is, it fits well. It clips into place just as it was designed to without any problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do? The I've put a bit of lube on the metal clips it has... no dice. I've put weather stripping foam on the actual shifter surround (where this bezel rests on) and that didn't help. I've even tried loosening the few screws in the center stack in hopes that if everything moved a little bit more, there would be less stress on this bezel. Nope.

I'm running out of ideas and it's driving me crazy. I'm tempted to order a new bezel from Ford but really, there's nothing physically wrong with mine.

welcome to owning an American economy car... tolerances are loose and sooner or later darn near every plastic to plastic surface is going to make noise. When ever I have to take a panel off for any reason, I always try to add a little piece of duzzy Tesa tape over all of the clips. I also have a roll of 1/4" Tesa that I will try to put down any where that panel touches another piece of plastic. 95% of the time it takes care of it.

    Yeah, you are not wrong!

What's funny is, around the mid 2000s, Ford (and everyone really) upped their interior game. Soft touch dashboards, better materials, etc. But, the kind of thin flimsy plastic I'm dealing with in this 2016 ST is the EXACT same stuff I had to rip apart and silence in my 98 Explorer. The more things change, the more they stay the same I guess.

    UPDATE

So I went ahead and removed the entire hvac control module + shifter bezel piece. Not difficult at all. There's 3 torx T25 screws and then the rest is just tabs. It's a little stiff the first time you pull it out but everything here is pretty sturdy and you don't have to worry about snapping anything.

There's a handful of connectors on the back that need to be disconnected. None are difficult though removing the USB port is a little stiff. Pull em all out and take a look at what you've got...

The hvac control module is on top and the storage cubby is below. All of the flexing plastic creaking sound comes from that hvac control module. So, I cut up some pieces of fairly dense foam (Bought in a 2 foot square sheet at Home Depot) and simply jammed the foam between the cubby and the hvac control module. Like so...

Carefully install it back into the car.

And here's the video evidence of what the foam does...

    the before (creaking)

    the middle (everything removed. quiet)

the end (packed with foam, reassembled and quiet)

    I think we're good.
