    Carbon fiber moonroof replacement??

This is a long shot, but would there be a cost effective and structurally sound way of making carbon fiber sunroof/moonroof replacement panels? I figure these 2x3 foot (or bigger on CUVs) panes of sound canceling safety glass have to weigh a good 10+lbs each, not to mention being unpleasantly expensive. So why not wrap a lightweight aluminium frame in some CF, run some rubber gaskets around the edges and have a fully functional replacement at 1/3 the weight?? Am I over or under thinking this?

Are you saying you want to replace the glass with opaque carbon fiber? aka the 90s bmw sunroof:

I doubt it would be as simple as your initial idea makes it sound but could be possible, i would say good luck

JST lists the whole sunroof at 28lbs; they dont break down what the glass vs the motor/frames weighs but they do mention door glass is around 7lbs a pane
