When it comes to hot hatches, the Mazdaspeed3 has been one of the best on the market, but Ford has never been far behind, and their 2013 Ford Focus ST could very well challenge Mazda’s new model. The reason we have high hopes for Ford’s latest model is because it’s turbocharged and has many improvements, so how does it compare?
We’ve come across an informative video review where we get to see a 2013 Ford Focus ST vs Mazdaspeed3, where the performance specs are compared to see which of the two has the edge. So let’s look at the all-important facts first.

A 2.0L Ecoboost engine powers the 2013 Ford Focus ST, which is able to produce 252 horsepower and a 0-60 mph time of just 5.9 seconds. Compare this to the 2013 Mazdaspeed3, with its 2.3-liter engine producing 263 horsepower, although the acceleration is a little slower with a 0-60 mph time of 6.5 seconds.

The reason for this is because the Mazdaspeed3 weighs 3281 pounds, while the ST weighs in at 3223 pounds. The Mazdaspeed3 will achieve 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway, compared to 23 mpg city and 32 mpg highway for the ST.
The 2013 Mazdaspeed3 looks angry and aggressive, which is what a hot-hatch should be. The ST looks a little more reserved, although that larger grille looks as though it’s ready to suck up the road and spit it out the back.

Above we have side-by-side comparison figures of these two vehicles, along with an extensive video review below to see which out of the 2013 Ford Focus ST and Mazdaspeed3 comes out on top.

More info on the Fiesta ST

05/17/2013| 07:44am
•Ford receives 3,000 orders for the new Fiesta ST from across Europe since reaching dealerships in March; U.K., Germany and Switzerland lead the way
•Fastest production Fiesta can is capable of 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds and 220 km/h top speed with 20 per cent better fuel economy than previous Fiesta ST
•High-specification interior and exterior styling and technology options are a hit with new Fiesta ST customers; Spirit Blue is most popular colour
COLOGNE, Germany, May 17, 2013 - The Ford Fiesta ST - Ford's fastest ever production small car - is off to fast start with hot-hatch connoisseurs placing 3,000 orders since March.
Customers in the U.K. have bought more than half of all models sold to date, with Germany placing the next largest number of orders, followed by Switzerland.
The new 182 PS Fiesta ST can achieve 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 220 km/h - supported by an advanced chassis developed by Ford Team RS, the European arm of Ford Motor Company's Global Performance Vehicle group.
It also offers both a 20 per cent increase in power against the previous, first-generation, model and a 20 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions to 138 g/km*.
"The word of mouth on Fiesta ST has been phenomenal and it's clear we have something special on our hands," said Roelant de Waard, vice president, Marketing, Sales and Service, Ford of Europe. "We are really proud of our product development team for delivering a car that the top auto critics across Europe say not only is astonishingly good but also very affordable."
The Ford vehicle dynamics department that developed the new Fiesta ST last month was named the Dynamics Team of the Year at the 2013 Vehicle Dynamics International Awards, and Ford Team RS vehicle dynamics specialist David Put won the title of Dynamicist of the Year.
Powered by Ford's 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine, the new Fiesta ST offers performance-tuned steering, suspension, brakes and enhanced... [Read More]

More photos of the Cosworth CS 330.

May 17, 2013
While Ford’s Stock from the factory floor, the ST boasts 252 turbocharged horsepower, 154 miles per hour top speed at the racetrack, but also 32 miles per gallon for highway driving. However, the Ford achieves these figures from a turbo-charged inline four-cylinder engine, which is a fresh canvas in the eyes of those wishing to improve the car’s performance.
Recently, Cosworth — one of the biggest names in the aftermarket business and famed for building some incredibly potent racing engines — got its paws on the Focus ST, and in partnership with M&J Enterprises, set about overhauling the car to suit the taste of the more adrenaline-seeking driver.
To a Cosworth CS 330 Edition body kit with front spoiler, a carbon fiber center and brake ducts, side skirts, roof spoiler, rear skirt, and carbon fiber diffuser were all added to the exterior to ensure the aerodynamics would be able to match the power being put under the hood.
Though the 2.0 litre EcoBoost was left in place, it was made over almost in full by the folks at Cosworth, who threw in an upgraded turbo and intercooler, forged pistons with connecting rods, high-performance cams and gaskets, a Ford Racing air intake and cat-back exhaust, and a jacked-up ECU. All said and done, the overhauled car will put out about 330 horsepower and 323 pound-feet of torque.
While hot-hatch tuning has long been a tradition in Europe, America has not yet gotten into the practice. With M&J’s new Focus ST though, it seems as though the emerging market is getting off to a strong start.

Aftermarket upgrades serve those craving power beyond stock performance
By Larry Edsall
Ford touts the Focus ST as not only being the company's first "truly global performance car," but also as the forerunner for future performance vehicles in North America.
That means it offers a powerful but responsible punch; in the case of the Focus ST, 252 turbocharged horsepower, 154 miles per hour top speed at the racetrack, but also 32 mpg fuel economy while cruising the freeway.
And that's the sort of combination of numbers that many car enthusiasts will want; many — but not all.
For those who crave more, there are all sorts of possibilities available in the automotive aftermarket, and a bunch of them were packaged together on the 2013 Ford Focus ST Cosworth CS330 car displayed at the most recent SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) Show.
The car was the product of a joint effort by M&J Enterprises of Phillips Ranch, Calif.; Cosworth LLC, the California-based descendent of the famed auto racing engine-building enterprise; and Ford Racing and the Ford Racing Performance Parts group.
M&J started with a standard 2013 Focus ST and added a Cosworth CS 330 Edition body kit with front spoiler with carbon fiber center and brake ducts, side skirts, roof spoiler, rear skirt and carbon fiber diffuser. The 330 package was continued inside the car with shift knob and trim, and, for good measure, a Ford Racing Performance Parts short-throw shifter.
The exterior was painted a shade of PPG Environbase called Tangerine Scream, with Deep Black and Gunmetal Gray accents.
Ford Racing coilover suspension, Big-Brake kit, brake pads and stainless steel braided brake lines were installed, as were a set of Kahn Design Cosworth RS2000 19x8.5 wheels and 235/35 Pirelli PZero tires.
Such underpinnings are important and necessary because of the Cosworth and Ford Racing tweaks done to the car's 2.0-liter EcoBoosted four-cylinder engine, namely a Cosworth turbo and intercooler upgrade, a set of Cosworth forged pistons and connecting rods,... [Read More]
