Ford’s Fresh Faced Hot Hatch

By Luke Vandezande, Mar 26, 2015
Michael Lewis wrote “Liar’s Poker” in 1989 after rubbing shoulders with the “big swinging d****” working at Salomon Brothers, a Wall Street investment bank that gained notoriety for its work with mortgage-backed securities. It’s an excellent story.

Guys like them treated money like you and I do Kleenexes. From his account, I imagine they would look at something like the upcoming Ford GT as a casual purchase and in some senses very little of that has changed.

Needless to say, I am no Wall Street banker but it’s comforting to know that there is a wealth of performance vehicles today that are remarkable in both their capability and attainability.

Halos Are For Walls, Hot Hatches Are For Garages

The Focus ST is a perfect example. Ford refreshed it this year with a new front fascia and lights along with optionally available racing stripes and wheels. The center stack is supposedly different but I only know that from reading Ford’s press literature and it gets a new “flat-bottom” steering wheel to make sure that people bigger than me can fit. Seriously, it’s a tight squeeze and I might as well represent the “lollypop guild…”

Anyway, none of that really matters because the Focus ST is still exactly what you will remember reading about in 2012 when it debuted: a rip-roaring riot of a car that really doesn’t cost much.

Ford managed to achieve that by dropping its 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine into the Focus with 252 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque that should make it torturously difficult to control. Except it isn’t.

Still So Much Fun

As you might remember, the Focus ST gets something Ford called its “torque steer compensation system” that basically reduces the electric power steering assistance in the direction of the wheel. It works to nullify the side effects that come from sending entirely too much torque to the axle that is already busy governing your trajectory.

You can feel it... [Read More]

Updates promise to make fast Ford Focus ST Estate more fun than ever

It seems strange that hot wagons aren’t more popular, because this 2015 Ford Focus ST Estate delivers all the handling, speed and excitement of the hatch, with genuine family friendly practicality. Despite power output staying constant, the EcoBoost engine is a peach, even if the ride is a bit nibbly. If you prioritise fuel economy then the diesel is a better idea, but if it’s thrills you’re after, the petrol car wins hands down.

Hot estates are making a serious comeback of late. Forget the array of V8-powered Mercedes AMG wagons currently available, we’re talking about mainstream family cars with a sting in their tail. The Skoda Octavia vRS has been around for a couple of years now, but you’ll soon be able to buy a SEAT Leon Cupra ST, while a new Volkswagen Golf GTD Estate has been confirmed for the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Ford can claim some credit for the renewed interest – it’s been offering a Focus ST Estate since 2012, and thanks to a recent series of mechanical and cosmetic updates, it should be better to drive and as practical as ever. It threw in a curveball for the facelift, too, because you can now order your fast Focus Estate with the choice of a 247bhp 2.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine or a 182bhp 2.0 TDCi diesel. We drove the diesel ST hatch last month, so it’s the petrol wagon we’re focusing on here.

From a purely practical point of view, the Focus Estate could well be all the car you ever need. Open the large tailgate and there’s 476 litres with the rear seats up, or a whopping 1,502 litres with them down, forming a perfectly flat load space. Compare that to 316 litres and 1,101 litres respectively for the hatchback and the benefits are easy to see.

OK, so there’s a slight penalty in terms of price and performance – the Estate costs £1,100 more than the equivalent hatchback and takes 0.2 seconds longer to cover 0-62mph.

But remarkably, claimed fuel economy and CO2 emissions are identical at 41.5mpg and... [Read More]

2016 Ford Focus RS Sedan Digitally Imagined

When Hungarian pixel artist X-Tomi Design lets its creative juices flow, you’d better be prepared for a helluva good rendering. After X-Tomi offered the World Wide Web with his take on a wagon-ified 2016 Ford Focus RS, the same Photoshop wizard returns with the sedan variant rendering of the hottest hot hatch of the moment.

As you can see in the photo gallery below, X-Tomi didn’t go all wild with the 2016 Ford Focus RS sedan, but only elongated the actual thing in a similar fashion to what the Blue Oval has done with the 2015 Ford Focus and its sedan brother. Even the taillights and the trunk door were perfectly replicated by X-Tomi.

While the humdrum sedan makes do with a tiny boot spoiler, the rendering on hand adds a bigger wing a la the Subaru WRX STI, but its size isn’t on par with the humongous spoiler of the rally-bred monster from Japan. The blueish exterior color too might led you to believe that you’re looking at a Ford-badged WRX STI.

An aesthetic detail that sort of spoils the three-quarter view of the 2016 Ford Focus RS sedan rendering is the black, plasticky and pointy aerial. But then you look at the impressive aero diffuser, two exhaust pipes and those aggressive vents at the sides of the rear bumper, and it hits you: the Focus RS sedan is cool.

Unfortunately for us petrolheads, there’s no intel from FoMoCo on such a hot sedan or a wagon version of the 2016 Focus RS. Still, we’re thankful to the gods of high-octane gasoline and twin-scroll turbocharging that the Focus RS got the green light in compact hatchback format.

Now we’re waiting for the Blue Oval’s Saarlouis plant in Germany to gear up for production late this year, with first deliveries (United States of America and Canada included) slated for the first quarter of... [Read More]

Thank God Almighty, speed at last!

The long rumored and heavily speculated Focus RS is finally coming, and it looks fantastic! Images of the new RS were leaked last night, and the official European reveal was over a little while ago, and man, this thing is going to light some underwear on fire. Thanks to a few members posting up with some compiled details, we have a little more precise image of what this new RS we can expect with this new car.
