New Ford Fiesta ST and Focus ST development under way

The next-generation of hot Fiesta and Focus models could arrive by 2020, but a Mondeo ST is unlikely

by Mike Duff, 10 June 2016

Ford Performance is starting work on the next-generation Fiesta and Focus ST now that the Focus RS is in production, but a hot version of the current Mondeo looks increasingly unlikely.

Focus RS chief engineer Tyrone Johnson told Autocar his next job was to start work on the replacements for the Fiesta and Focus STs.

Although Johnson wouldn’t discuss production dates, the new Focus and Fiesta are due in 2018-2019, suggesting launch dates for the ST versions of 2019-2020.

Johnson says both cars will have to retain their blend of accessible performance and everyday usability but will also have to evolve to deal with competition from new rivals.

Johnson was less encouraging about a Mondeo ST being engineered to rival the Audi S4/S6 and BMW M3/M5.

“It’s a pretty big car and the rivals are now offering around 500bhp. I think that’s a big ask for the Mondeo,” he said.

At around 1800kg and nearly 4.9 metres long, the Mondeo is closer in size to the BMW 5 Series than the 3 Series.

“Making a fast Mondeo fit our HP2 category would be very difficult,” said Johnson.

Any Ford Performance model has to fit into one of three categories — HP1, HP2 and Elite — which Ford defines by strict performance and handling criteria.

The new GT is an Elite model, the Focus RS an HP2 and the Fiesta/Focus ST are HP1s.

If they don't fix customers 2015 and 2016 ST's with the CEL engine issue with dealers changeing plugs, coil packs, injectors, and engine heads with no fix in view from ford engineering they won't need to worry about future sales on ST's or RS's. Either the Ecoboost design is garbage or they are getting the engine parts made and assembled in timbuctoo, meaning cheap fabrication and cheap labor adds up to a piece of garbage product. It is really sad that and American icon Ford has let it come too this point.

Best thing ford can do is forget the internals of the motor and out a bigger twin scroll turbo on the ST. They should be keeping the power output close to where it is now but give us a stronger platform to build off of. Remove the E-diff and put in a true LSD. That would be awesome. Granted yes I know it will cost more to do these things but the car would be phenomenal out of the box.

I would say he got a lemon and is a little heated about it.

I have read a few threads on CEL but most of them aren't as big of deal as the owners are claiming, at least from what I can gather.

Be interesting what the future holds and see what they do with the ST and RS lines.

Guys type in search " check engine light" you will find many different post, but you will find one with 51 pages with the same codes and parts on 2015s and 2016s being related weekly with no true fix found. Over the past few weeks there has been guys with new 2016s popping on daily with their ST'S starting this crap. And these are guys just finding this out on this website. If I was a betting man I would say there are a lot more out there not on this site. The very fact that there are ford techs on here saying ford is aware of this problem says a lot. Many of them having given lists of what it could be with no fix found at this time. Many have told what was done to their car on each visit to the dealer, and some have scanned there shop receipts on here so others would have copies to take to their dealer to show how bad the problem is.

This, power levels are just fine and if owners want more, there are easily accessible and warranty supported mods from FRPP and Mountune. Either a real LSD or better yet, a dumb down AWD system would benefit the future STs more.
