North American Focus ST vs Euro Focus ST gas mileage claims

I saw this I believe yesterday in a post and I looked through the past two days of threads and could find it again. I figure I'll ask it go others to chime in.

So far it would appear that many North American STs are getting way below reported MPG so far.

On the other hand I've read reports stating that the Euro ST is getting much better MPG and closer to the standard North American Focus of nearly 40mpg.

What gives with this? Is the edge because the Imperial gallon is larger and is based on a 40 ounce quart rather than the American gallon being based on a 32 ounce quart with both having 4 quarts to a gallon?

Is it the weight of the North American version a problem which weighs in at an alleged 3223lbs or 1465kg, what is the offical weight of the Euro version and is it lighter?

Something is amiss for a Global vehicle.

I would suspect that the difference is that:

    1) The UK gallon is bigger than ours.

    2) The US has crap gas thanks to the farm bill and the corn lobby.

Willing to bet its the imp. Vs us gallon as well as the higher ethanol content in us fuel. It's 10-15% per gallon.

This. If a gallon were bigger, you'd obviously get more miles out of it.

Relatedly, EPA testing procedures are not accurate reflections of real-world driving. Also, this article talks about the inaccuracy of hybrid mileage claims, but speaks to regular internal combustion claims, as well, and how manufacturers (Ford included) can game the system.

    1.2 Imperial gallons = 1 US gallon

    1.2 X 32 MPG = 38.4 MPG

US rated at 32MPG HWY EU rated at 39 MPG

Has anyone figured out the weight of the Euro version ST?

All the other figures point to the MPG claims are equal due to the differences in the size of a gallon. So of course the British Euro version should be getting better mileage due to the larger gallon used.

What about the other part of Europe that uses the liter? I always remember the rate of how many liters per 100km being used as a measure. It takes roughly 3.8L to equal a gallon and I'm curious if their rating is lower or higher than ours.

Also, good luck finding 87 Octane in the UK. Most gas stations there don't have anything under 95 Octane, so you don't have to use as much fuel to get the car up to speed. That would help with the mileage.

You must realize that the octane calculations are different in North America vs UK:

    Octane ratings explained

Normal unleaded gasoline has an octane rating of around 90 to 95 depending on where you live and the exact method used to calculate the rating. (Fuel that scores 90 octane in North America would be considered roughly 95 octane in Europe due to the different calculation methods.)

Exactly. So their "regular" is our essentially our premium. Good call!
